Edition Peters est maintenant ravi de présenter la nouvelle édition de Roy Howat des « Trois Nouvelles Études » de Chopin au sein de « The Complete Chopin ». Publiées à l'origine en 1840 dans la « Méthode des Méthodes » qui regroupait plusieurs compositeurs, les « Trois Nouvelles Études » sont les études les moins ouvertement virtuoses de Chopin, mais sans doute les plus sophistiquées de toutes en termes de formation de la sensibilité du pianiste au son, au rythme et à la texture. Debussy a dit un jour qu'il avait « usé ses doigts » en jouant la deuxième d'entre eux.
180 ans après, il semble extraordinaire que de nouveaux détails puissent encore être trouvés dans les pièces, mais l'édition de Howat en publie certains pour la première fois, notamment un certain nombre de variantes mélodiques dans la première Étude, ainsi que des notes dans la deuxième Étude que toutes les éditions précédentes avaient supprimées. Agissant littéralement comme un pivot dans la structure de la seconde Étude, ces notes authentiques ? restaurées ici avec sensibilité ? modifient notre perception de la texture et de l?harmonisation de la musique au moment où la pièce prend son envol sur l?une des cordes de modulation les plus époustouflantes de Chopin. Notre édition confirme également certains doigtés authentiques encore inconnus de la plupart des pianistes, comme le pouce fantaisiste qui « sautille » sur les touches noires à la fin de la troisième Étude.

Conformément à la procédure éditoriale de cette série, la présente édition est basée sur une source principale, à savoir le manuscrit de Chopin soigneusement préparé pour son ami Moscheles. De plus, certains changements que Chopin a introduits après la publication sont présentés ici comme des variantes, permettant aux pianistes de choisir des options de performance en connaissant sciemment leur origine.

‘Feroaring fan Lucht’ is gebaseerd op de gelijknamige roman van de Friese schrijver Rink van der Velde (1932-2001). De vele werken van Van der Velde zijn meestal gebaseerd op ervaringen die hij opdeed tijdens zijn werk als journalist of uit dehistorie van zijn eigen leefomgeving (Z.O. Friesland). De tweede wereldoorlog is een vaak terugkerend thema. De hoofdfiguren zijn niet zelden eenlingen. Ze kenmerken zich door het feit dat ze zich niet het meeste aantrekken van de geldenderegels die in de ‘normale’ maatschappij in acht worden genomen. De hoofdfiguur uit Feroaring fan Lucht ‘Durk Luchtigheid’ (in de volksmond Durk Snoad) voldoet volledig aan deze omschrijving. Jan Bosveld heeft een muzikalevertelling gecomponeerd waarin hij gebruik maakt van een leid-motief (twee stijgende kwart sprongen Bes-Es-C-F). Dit leid-motief heeft de toepasselijke naam ‘Durk-motief’ gekregen en is in vele hoedanigheden zowel melodisch als in deaccordiek (kwartstapeling) te beluisteren. Het werk begint met het ‘Durk-motief’. Levenslustig en onbekommerd stapt Durk door het leven genietend van de dingen die het leven voor hem in petto heeft. Plotseling is het tijd voor hetapp?l (maat 24) Durk blaast op een oude gedeukte bugel een soort reveille. Hij ziet zeven kinderen verschijnen maar bedenkt dat het er toch meer zouden moeten zijn. Na een wat nadrukkelijker geblazen reveille telt hij tien telgen. Dit stelt hemtevreden. Na het ochtendritueel trekt hij de natuur in (maat 28). Hij geniet van de wind de zon en de rust en laat de dingen op zich afkomen zoals ze zich aandienen. Dat Durk uit de natuur ook geldelijk gewin haalt hoort men in de nachtelijkestrooptocht (maat 73). Als hij langs zijn opgezette vallen gaat blijft hij op zijn hoede voor de veldwachter. Deze ligt echter als een wolf op de loer en ontdekt Durk. Hij blaast op zijn fluit (maat 111) en er ontstaat een achtervolging (maat 116).De sterke arm is langer dan Durk denkt en hij wordt uiteindelijk in de kraag gevat. Na tussenkomst van een maatschappelijk werkster wordt Durk tewerkgesteld bij Philips en verhuist hij naar een nieuwbouwwoning in Drachten (maat 149). Hijvoelt zich in zijn nieuwe huis en op het werk niet op zijn gemak en verlangt terug naar zijn oude bestaan (maat 157). Tegen alle bureaucratie in besluit hij terug te gaan naar zijn oude woning op de Zandlaan. Zelfs de burgemeester komt eraan tepas om deze eigenzinnige Fries om te praten maar helaas het heeft geen zin. Als hij krijgt te horen dat hij mag blijven wonen waar hij heel zijn leven al heeft doorgebracht is hij een gelukkig man (maat 230). Eind goed al goed.

Seven Shrinking Machines by Ben Gaunt was written for Icasrus Ensemble as part of the European Composers’ Professional Development Programme 2012.Seven Shrinking Machines had its world première at Spazio Icarus Reggio Emilia Italy on the 19th November 2012. and later received its UK première at Bates Mill Huddersfield UK on the 21st November 2012.Seven Shrinking Machines is a study in proportion and memory. Seven distinct musical sections are presented each with their own identity and set of rules; each with their own ‘DNA’. As the piece is played out a section is taken away oneat a time until only one remains.

Jake joins the band at school to play clarinet. He continually refuses to play the clarinet correctly as demanded by his band director and private music teacher. Jake is stubborn. All Jake wants to do is play the clarinet his own way until he receives a mysterious letter in the mail from the Clarinet Wizard. The Wizard warns Jake that if he doesn't play his clarinet correctly and folllow his teacher's instructions his clarinet will shrink until he is unable to play it anymore. Jake discovers the secret to keeping his clarinet from shrinking by changing his attitude. Jake begins to follow his teacher's instruction and become really good on the clarinet.
