This Drones, Variations, Ornaments sheet music is the full score for this innovative and dramatic piece by Nico Muhly . According to Muhly , this piece is music in constant transformation, featuring steadily evolving melodies from a number of instruments, punctuated with hugely original percussive parts, with instructions to fill the Cymbal with chain, coins and other metal objects in order to make it sound like glass shattering. It is this inspired composition that makes Drones, Variations, Ornaments the interesting and acclaimed piece that it is. With this piece, Muhly has attempted to recreate the sound and motion of a machine through music. String chords begin the piecewith a light and soothing opening, before the machine (made up of Winds, Guitar, Percussion and Piano) awakens. This truly unusual piece is a joy to listen to and perform, and we are pleased to offer this full score to you.

“Dedicated to Ulysse Delécluse, Variations on a tune of the Pays d'Oc by Louis Cahuzac is a piece for Clarinet and Piano that refers to an area of the south of France. This set contains four variations on Se Canto, a song from the valley of the Garonne, and was composed for upper-intermediate / advanced players. Rhythms, chromaticisms, trills and other technical aspects make this piece very challenging. Its four variations are: 1. Allegretto vivo e leggerio, 2. Alla polacca, 3. Andante and 4. Moderato. Highly melodic, this piece would work exceptionally well for a recital. Louis Cahuzac was one of the very few clarinettists of the beginning of the 20th century who managed to make a career as a soloist.â€.

Composer and organist, Joseph Bonnet (1884-1944) is considered one of the most major French pipe organ players. It is no surprise, therefore, that his Concert Variations for Organ are very well informed. Following his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bonnet took over as concert organist at the institution. Concert Variations for Organ was compiled in 1906, soon after his graduation. The work begins with a helpful index of the organ registrations and performance directions. Concert Variations begins with a virtuosic, cadenza-like theme in E minor. Following this, four variations are heard, all containing contrast in organ sound, tonality and exploited melody and rhythm. For all advanced, aspiring organists, Bonnet's Concert Variations is an essential addition to the repertoire.

“French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Gregorian Variations on a Salve Ragina 1964. As with his other wind compositions, Gregorian Variations for Trumpet and String Orchestra and Organ reduction was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Gregorian Variations on a Salve Regina is a highly unusual and modern work based on an old Marian Hymn (a song for the Virgin Mary). The variations exploit tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. This Tomasi piece is suitable for advanced trumpeters, providing an exciting, alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.â€.

A remarkable set of 40 variations derived from a single melody by Otaker Sevcik. Arranged for the Viola with Piano accompaniment, the variations become progressively more complex and difficult throughout the work, making this set ideal as a set of challenging exercises for the Viola student. As well as presenting a huge variety of technical goals, much can be learned from this work about the nature of composition, melody-building and the potential versatility of a single melodic idea. A superb and satisfyingly musical teaching aid.

“Variations by Eugène Bigot is a piece for Trombone and Piano, written for advanced players. Initially composed for the Paris Conservatoire contest, this lyrical piece is quite long and difficult. It covers numerous sections using a good knowledge of the instrument and a great ability to play it. Variations is divided in five parts: Cantabile, Comodo, Gracioso, Scherzando and Impetuoso. This really nice piece can be used for contests as well as recitals. Eugène Bigot (1888?1965) was a professor at the Paris Conservatoire, a conductor and a composer.â€.

MusicWorks – Grade 4 First published in 1989, this work from the late Calvin Custer epitomizes his command of orchestration and understanding of musical pacing. The familiar folk melody is stated first by a solo flute then followed by a remarkable series of variations starting with a brass choir accompanied by woodwind flourishes. An Andante variation features the woodwind choir accompanying solos by baritone and oboe, and this leads to a striking fugue variation and bold finish. Truly symphonic band writing at its best.
