The thirty-minute composition exposes a musical theme whose rampant changes are set in three movements that correspond to some of the famous eight triagrams of the 'I GING' (the Book of Changes): TSCHEN is the awakener, the thunder, to which the properties of the provocative, Violent, associated with impetuous growth. KAN as depth and abyss has the image of water, which corresponds to the moon and everything mysterious, difficult to understand and melancholic (logically this movement is based on a 12-tone series and a shifted, mirror-symmetrical rhythm). TOUEI is the pleasure, the friends, the happiness, the serenity, to which the image of the lakecorresponds. The changes do not want to imitate Asian models in terms of rhythm or melody, but rather remain in the language conventions of Western music in the sound material. The bridging to Chinese music succeeds above all through the use of the sheng (one of the oldest musical instruments) and the formal implementation of the given spiritual principles in tonal growth processes. Though known nowadays for his considerable corpus of church music, Harold Darke's earlier years saw a proliferation of compositions for many and varied forces, a result of his fruitful study at the Royal College of Music.Written towards the end of 1908, these virtuosic Three Concert Studies stand as happy advocates of the Post-Romanticism then in vogue. This edition marks their first publication and contains a brief background on the work's composition as well as a full list of editorial changes. These Three Concert Studies certainly deserve to be more widely known and enjoyed.

Two scores are provided, rather than a separate recorder part, so that the recorder player can see and respond to the pianist's part as they play.

These Three Studies for Four-handed Piano were conceived of as a triptych whose unifying principles were to be the first-slow-fast movement order of the classical sonata and a symmetrical arrangement of tonalities with A major occupying the centre (F minor- A major- C minor). The term Studies alludes not so much to the 19th century pedagogical concept of pieces-as-exercises, as to an attempt to extend, investigate and study the possibilities of expression and texture of the piano for four hands. The First Study is generated out of a single rhythmical motif whose development is modified by the intervention of two contrapuntual passages. A certain difficulty of execution arising from the need to cross hands in both sections of the keyboard conforms, in this case, to the traditional definition of study as an exercise focussed on a specific technical problem. The second piece might be defined as a study of expression, being the explicit disposition of an ostinato accompaniment and two superior voices in conversation. I cannot help, listening to this study, being reminded of the texture of the slow Largo of Bach's Concerto for 2 violins and the manifest pathos of the Andante of Prokofiev's 2nd Violin Concerto. The Third Study is an exercise in rhythmical interpenetration in which continual changes of accentuation and metre are combined with passages of a light and mellifluous character. It is a long-standing ambition of mine to supplement this work with three more triptychs and, so, complete a set of twelve studies for four-handed piano.

As the titles already suggest, this piece describes three different moods in modern style. The first movement is characterised by vivid articulation, augmented fifths, strongs rhythms and a contrast between vigorous and lyrical passages. The second movement is a melancholic daydream with Long legato passages. The third movement bubbles with the joy of living, simply through the regular time changes.
