Road Movie was commissioned by Professor Niels-Ole Bo Johansen of the Royal Academy of Music, Arhus Denmark and premiered in Salt Lake City Utah for the International Trombone Festival 2008.Wayne Siegel has written a compelling and dramatic musical canvas using a large, 16-part Trombone Ensemble. He uses many special effects on the Trombone to give his score a vivid sound imagery.Road Movie consists of three movements, each depicting a scene in an imaginary road movie.The first movement, AM, is set on an early morning on a country highway. The abbreviation AM is, of course, ambiguous, implying both the early hours of the day as well as the type of radio that was most common in cars in my youth.The second movement, Canyon Canon depicts a landscape inspired by the Grand Canyon.The third movement, Highway, the road movie comes to a most tragic end.This work of about 23 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

The Lines from 'The Youth of Man' is dedicated to the University of Birmingham Motet Choir. Crafted with the composer's usual skill in choral writing, it uses the technique whereby two voice parts often double each other an octave apart. In three continuous sections, it rises to three climaxes, the third of them, which is the biggest, has much subdivision at the words 'Depths of thyself'. These are then repeated as the quietening peroration.

The Geminis Concertino was written in 2005 and dedicated to Gerard Claret and the National Chamber Orchestra of Andorra (ONCA).
The work, as its name implies, is a small-scale concerto for violin and 15 string instruments. Its score is basically a chamber piece in which the solo part never takes an overly virtuoso role. Conceived as a single movement, played without interruption, its internal construction consists of three classic sections: A, bars 1-72, B, bars 73-161, and C, from bar 162 to the end of the piece. Part B begins with the two opening measures of Bela Bartok's Violin Concerto simply as a reminder of a composer and a work that has impressed me since I was very young.I should confess that the entire Geminis Concertino has a certain Bartokian air that I attribute to the love I have always professed for this composer and that lately seems to affect me much as it did in my youth.--The author. Comentarios del Espanol: Concertino Geminis es una obra escrita el ano 2005, que dedique a Gerard Claret y a la Orquestra de Cambra de Andorra.
La obra, como su nombre indica, es un pequeno concierto para violin y 15 instrumentos de cuerda, sin que la parte solista tome nunca un papel excesivamente virtuosistico, ya que la partitura tiene un caracter eminentemente cameristico. Concebida en un solo tiempo y, por lo tanto, interpretada sin interrupcion, su construccion interna la constituyen los tres movimientos clasicos: A, del compas 1 al 72; B, del compas 73 al 161; y C, del compas 162 al final. La parte B comienza con los dos primeros compases del Concierto para violin de Bela Bartok, simplemente como recuerdo de un compositor y de una obra que, ya desde muy joven, me impresionaron.

“The competition 'Jugen musiziert' 1994 (Youth Making Music) provided the occasion for the composition of the 'Märchengestalten' (Fairytale Figures.) The Youth Music School in Hameln, to which I owe my initial musical training and many formative experiences, asked me if I could contribute a contemporary work for a trio of pupils. Thus this cycle was written, beginning with the fairy and the idea of tracing this word with musical letters. The fairytale-like atmosphere is particularly created by the melody consisting of harmonics on the violoncello. This procedure applies symbolically to the entire cycle: writing a melodic, comprehensible kind of music for young interpreters which nonetheless contain acoustic attractiveness and wit. The plodding gestures of the gnome are part of this, as is a quotation that the witch locates in the world of fairytales. The three movements for the entire trio are complemented by two duets: the prince and the princess. Thus there arises an alteration of instrumental colours that also opens up various possibilities for performances, for each movement can be played on its own as well. When my family opera 'Ronja Räubertochter' was premiered at the Deutschen Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg in February 2015, it was clear how intensively children and youths could react to contemporary sounds. Accordingly, they share similar material but, like the intertwining blood of cousins, their natures differ: No. 2 being somewhat acerbic and declamatory, No. 3 more lyric and gentler. An annunicatory 'leaping motive' (derived from a motto generated by my name) opens Quartet No. 2 and inhabits the course of the piece as a cyclical binding-force. A five-note motive, usually very deliberate, also keeps recurring like an insistent caller. All three movements are based on tonal centers (I on B and E, II on D, III on C) and the harmonic 'grammar' spoken tends to recall the jazz world of my youth. To hopefully achieve a certain classical ambience was one of the goals of this piece, and all three movements have traditional forms. The first movement is a modified Sonata-Allegro design, with a severely-truncated recapitulation balanced by a lengthy, and decaying Coda. The second movement is a set of strophic variants and an epilogue interspersed with both solo ritornelli and first-movement material (the motto and the five-note motive) in the nature of a fantasia-like 'call-and-response.' It is dedicated to the memory of the American mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani. The third movement is a modified Rondo (ABACBA) which evolves out of the opening motto. All three movements make much use of canonic stretti, similar gestures, and repetition. The three original pieces for guitar Notturno, Napolitana (popolar songs) and Roma (March for guitar), together with three transcriptions, are included in a manuscript of 36 pages, noting in the frontispiece “Transcriptions and compositions of F. Balilla Pratella sent as a tribute to M.R. Brondi (1920)”.These compositions follow a traditional language, and, in the tonality and the alternating themes, are an expression of Pratella’s folkloric vein, with cantabile and melancholy melodies, with the exception of the march, that show some echoes of the nineteenth century guitar masters’ way of composing.There is a characteristic use of the quartine with no alternated thumb forefinger tremolo, that immediately recalls the plectrum orchestra so much used by Pratella in his youth.The discovery of these pieces – which happened accidentally and saved them from certain destruction – contributes to enhance that period of great guitarist turmoil preceding Segovia, establishing itself at the beginning of twentieth century in Italy with three compositions from an author that, along with the Bonaccorsi and Colacicchi, anticipated that current – already initiated by the Fara, Gabriel, Caravaglios – which was, in the following decades, to go by the name of ethnomusicology.

During her lifetime, Fanny Hensel was overshadowed by her brother Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who was three years her junior, and for a long time she was regarded merely as an occasional composer.
