The rediscovery of the original manuscripts of Max Reger's works for violin, viola and violoncello op. 131a-d in the Prague Conservatory Library represents a small sensation. These late works for solo strings dating from 1914 and 1915, the last of which appeared only posthumously, were previously known only from their first prints. The three duosop. 131b for two violins were composed within a few days, shortly after Easter 1914; it is particularly in this case that access to Reger's autograph is of great value in terms ofproviding insight into the genesis of the works.

Originally thought to be composed for two Horns, the Twelve Duos K. 487 have been transcribed for two Euphoniums by Ralph Sauer, retired Principal Trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Mr. Sauer has set them into three sets of keys. 1-4 are in F, 5-8 are in G and 9-12 are in A, giving the performers a nice mix of keys. This also makes three sets of Duos that can be used in recital if desired. The Duos can be performed by moderately advanced players.

Jérôme Duval lived in the late 18th and early 19th century. Despite his very French name, it would appear that he worked for some time in Germany, as his Opus 2, 3 and 4 were all published in Hamburg. Opus 2, which includes this Trio, Op. 2 No. 2 for two flutes and bassoon, can be assigned a tentative publications date of 1810. There are three Trios in Opus 2, Opus 3 consists of three Duos Concertants for flute and violin, and Opus 4 contains three Duos for two violins. The rest of Duval’s output includes three Quartets published in Brussels and a further Hamburg publication for voice and piano with the delightful title: Femmes sensibles écoutent le ramage - which means sensitive women listening to birdsong. The source for this edition of Trio Op. 2 No. 2 is the copy held in the British Library (shelf mark g.693.) The music was typeset by C.M.M. and F.H. Nex and replaces PP563. The set includes both score and three parts.ContentsAllegroAndantinoRondo - AllegrettoFormer Spartan Press Cat. No.: PP563.

The musical counterpoint possible in two and three-voice compositions make them a natural fit for the organ, and such works have been a part of the instrument’s repertoire since the very beginning. David Lasky has written seven free duos, eight free trios, and seven trios on familiar hymns to comprise this useful collection. The pieces are all short—most are less than two minutes—and thus can serve, individually or in groups, as fitting music anywhere in a service. Additionally, they will work well as teaching pieces at the early intermediate or intermediate level.

The two-part composition has always been an essential stage in didactic treatises for teaching counterpoint; the Duo has been of fundamental importance, since the early decades of the sixteenth century, in the teaching of singing and in instrumental practice. The interpretation and performance of Scarlatti’s Fughe a Due require on the one hand a correct and prompt interpretation of the chords which are the basis of the movement and the relationship between the two parts, and on the other an indispensable invention of a third or even a fourth part (to ensure, above all, full and significant harmony). An indication of this practice of filling in is offered by the same ms. source containing Scarlatti’s Fughe a Due. In Fugue II in D minor, in the first eleven bars, we find indicated above the Bass a series of numbers showing the interval in relation to the respective upper line. These indications should not be confused with the numerical marking typical of the basso continuo and of the partimento, for they establish a clear sign of the usual practice exercised in the teaching of counterpoint in order to guide the student visually to pass safely and speedily from two to three or more parts; this type of numbering is often found in the counterpoint methods of the time, in particular in the section illustrating the Contrapunto semplice e Diminuito. These fifteen Fughe a Due, unlike the many Duos and Duets which figure in the counterpoint methods, are not a simple display of formulas, but they assert themselves as a calculated sample of characterized styles and genres, a series of pieces conceived with an exquisite sense of form.
