Based on the traditional American shaped-note melody The Promised Land (first published in the 1800's), Beyond the Stars captures the spirit of the early American church musicians who voiced their enthusiasm for life and the freedom of worship through both vocal and instrumental music. The music features several mini-variations wrapped up in four large variations (Fast, Fast, Slow, Fast-recapitulation). The composer has created new thematic material for each variation by excerpting motifs from three separate phrases of the original shaped-note melody. A stunning and powerful work for winds. Dur: c. 6:20.

In 2014, I enjoyed a wonderful residence at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont,Wyoming. Ucross is an artist colony that gives writers, composers, and visual artists thegift of time, space, and support to follow their artistic pursuits; we are provided withstudio space, housing, and meals so that we can work continuously on our projects. I havebeen in residence at numerous artist colonies; however, nothing in my previousexperiences prepared me for living in such isolated, wild country. Ucross is situated on a20,000-acre cattle ranch at nearly 4,000 feet in elevation with fewer than 150 peopleliving within the town. But what Clearmont lacks in population, it makes up forabundantly and spectacularly in wilderness and wildlife. I composed the sextet Postcardsfrom Wyoming to offer three glimpses of what I found to be the most striking aspects ofmy residence. The Solitude of Stars, the third and final movement of the original sextet, was inspired by the stunning nightly display of the heavens above. Without city lightsdimming the night sky, countless stars shone brightly over the vast expanse of the prairie. This edition is part of The Solitude of Stars Project that I undertook during the 2020COVID-19 pandemic, which consists of a series of arrangements that I made forcolleagues and friends. In 2014, I enjoyed a wonderful residence at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont, Wyoming. When commissioned by UC Berkeley to compose a major work, Steven Stucky turned to the poetry of Lithuanian-Polish poet Czeslaw Milosz. One of Stucky's favorite writers, Milosz fled to the US in 1960, and joined the Berkeley faculty in 1961. He was still at Berkeley, his poems still banned back home in Poland, when he won the Nobel Prize in 1980. Many of his poems are dark, and some deal with the Holocaust. The Stars and the Roses sets three lighter, more lyrical poems for tenor and orchestra: Happiness, The Sun, and The Bird Kingdom, texts positively aglow with joy and tenderness. Comissioned by Berkeley Symphony, Joana Carneiro, Music Director, with funding from Music Alive, a national residency program of the League of American Orchestras and Meet the Composer.

“All Stars Aligned was originally to be a set of variations on a theme that is almost hidden in the opening bars. However, the piece took on much more of a fantasia feel and shape as I wrote it and it could be argued that a second theme first heard in the violin of the ground (derived from material in bar 5) becomes more dominant than the first as the piece progresses. The piece is in one continuous movement but is in three distinct sections and tempi: medium, slow and fast. The material shares some similarities with my piano trio, Nightswimming, and in some ways can be seen as a companion piece (minus the cello of course). The title comes from a track on an album by the artist St. Vincent called Marry Me which I hope is appropriate for a piece commissioned to celebrate a wedding anniversary.†Joe Duddell 2010.

With the weekly demands of providing music for corporate worship, choirs need an easy solution for quality worship music. Music ministries need arrangements that provide options for performance, conserve rehearsal time, and are consistent with the same style and integrity of the selections already at use in their program. Simply...the Best is that solution: an easy-to-sing booklet with three proven anthems re-arranged to maximize rehearsal efficiency. The songs are familiar and the parts are easy enough to learn in as little as one rehearsal. Simply...the Best arrangements are even crafted to work when there are no men available to sing, creating flexibility and the option for a women's-only choir. An exclusive benefit of the Simply...the Best series is the Virtual Accompanist trax (included on the CD accompaniment trax.) The Virtual Accompanist trax includes the women's parts being sung and played on the left channel and men's voice parts being sung and played on the right. By panning the trax to either side, you can let each section hear its parts separately. Whether you sing all three songs together or on separate occasions, with live accompaniment or with the split track accompaniment CD, this series is a simple solution to encourage choirs to lift their voices in praise. No choir is too small or too large to benefit from the practical arrangements and the new trax features of Simply...the Best.
