All In One for 3 String Quartets was composed by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen in 2013 (String Quartet No.12,13 and 14 played simultaneously). Gudmundsen-Holmgreen has written a collection of three new string quartets: String Quartet no. 12, ‘Each in Each’; String Quartet no. 13, ‘Mutual Ordering’, and String Quartet no. 14, ‘Well-Tuned Sounds’. Each quartet can be played on its own; they can also played simultaneously in any combination. When all three quartets are played together, as they are tonight, the combined work is titled All in One. About this collection, Gudmundsen-Holmgreenwrites: 'Some years ago Kronos and the vocal group Theatre of Voices performed three new pieces, which I had written for the two groups: one for Theatre of Voices (Green), and two for Kronos (New Ground and No Ground). They were played and sung by each group independently – but also both groups together concurrently, on top of each other, as a final gesture. The combined pieces were called New Ground Green and No Ground Green. 'David liked the idea (and the result) of pairs of quartets that could be played both independently and simultaneously, and asked me if the vocal quartet could be transformed into a string quartet. It could not. He then asked me to repeat the whole set-up with a new pair of quartets, adding also some percussion instruments, as was the case with Green for Theatre of Voices. Of course this was tempting. Furthermore David asked me to make one of the two new quartets a little easier to play. 'I began to work. The Kronos part of the pair of quartets turned out to be tough to play, as David puts it. Unfortunately the ‘easier’ one was tough to play also! So I had to write one more, which was then a little easier still (but still not easy). Although this is technically Cowie's seventh string quartet, it replaces his earlier fourth quartet, which he came to feel no longer fit with his compositional voice. The quartet fluctuates between a slow, luminous sound and fast, agitated music. Unlike much of Cowie's work, this music is abstracted from his usual preoccupation with the natural world, turning instead to look at an inner landscape. The composer describes the emotional force behind his quartet: The year 2009 was a terrible year in which I lost three close friends to cancer and an elder brother to Alzheimer's disease. It was also a year in which my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer; something from which she has thankfully made a great recovery. At times like these, emotions are sorely tested and highlighted. Four people I loved have gone, so this music must remain as testament not to death, but to the magnificent fragility and loveliness of life. It closes with a gentle and almost vaporising 'benediction' a kind of 'amen' if you like.

Though a piano can always be included, it is not an essential requirement for the performance of these settings: in some of the carols, two violins or two flutes are quite sufficient, especially if voices are used as well. The following combinations are particularly suitable for domestic music-making, whether or not voices are included as well:one violin and piano,two violins and piano,two or three violins,violins and recorders,two concert (C) flutes (and an alto flute) and - as the ideal combination for shepherds' songs - flutes, violins, cello and piano.Performing groups and music schools have the advantage of a wider choice of forces and the possibility of varying the instrumentation within the individual carols and verses. Thus large and small combinations can alternate, strings and flutes can play in turn, and finally the piano can be used by itself or to reinforce other instrumental combinations, in which case the cello can be added, too.The pieces are graded in increasing order of difficulty; the first carols are chosen so that they can be mastered by violinists after as little as 4 to 6 months of learning their instrument. The choise and sequence of the carols in this book, and also their keys, were determined, amongst other factors, by their suitability for the start of violin tuition, both in first and in third position, so that these carols make an especially good supplement of Christmas music to the violin method of Fritz and Gottfried Scharlach (with its principle of starting with the third position). Commissioned by the Mavron Quartet for its tenth anniversary, with funds from the PRS for Music foundation's Women Make Music award, Rhian Samuel's Threaded Light presents a novel take on the string-quartet genre. Two of its movements include a percussive element played by members of the ensemble, with an optional percussion part for a fifth player. In addition, the unusual seven-movement structure arises from two elements: the idea of a thread, continuous, stretched or broken; and, contrasting with this notion, the influence of pictorial imagery in the slow, evocative second and sixth movements ('Late Sun' and 'Estuary by Moonlight') inspired by the impression of light passing through clouds near the composer's home on the hills above Aberdyfi in mid-Wales. Deriving from shared material, three abstract, prelude-like movements entitled 'Twine' (Nos. 1, 4 and 7) act as the 'thread' that binds the work into a whole, placing the cloudscapes and the similarly luminous percussion-based inventions, No. 3, 'Glinting Stars' and No. 5, 'Foxtrot Gleam', within the framework of an overall and satisfying symmetry.

In 1989 when Louis Andriessen was teaching at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Miles Davis Autobiography was published.While reading it, he suddenly knew what the subject of his piece for the Kronos Quartet should be - early be-bop licks and especially the work of Charlie Parker. He wanted to do the impossible - be-bop is not at all idiomatic for string instruments. But be-bop had been an important influence on his musical development when he was young, and he decided to do something with this music from his youth. Basically the essence of Charlie Parker's playing is the extremely fast tempo. This fast tempo is really fast, because the playing is based upon the chord structure of existing melodies which are sometimes played two or three times as fast as normal. Parker needed speed to express what he musically felt: little time was left for him. This is the main explanation of the title of the work.In the beginning of Facing Death, Andriessen literally quotes fragments of Charlie Parker improvisations. He also quotes one original melody: Ornithology (which is based on How High the Moon). The 7th and 8th bars of Ornithology become an important motif inthe piece. The whole composition is one long development in Parker's fast tempo. This work was composed in 1990 for string quartet and later arranged for saxophone quartet.

Two years ago in Rome, I encountered a murmuration of starlings and I was amazed with its overwhelming beauty, changing shape as it moved. Moving of a fish school that you can watch in an aquarium, has the same beauty and the energy. According to the scientists, their fine movement in a flock is based on the following three simple rules: - steer to avoid crowding local flockmates - steer towards the average heading of local flockmates - steer to move towards the average position (center of mass) of local flockmates The word Boids refers to bird-like objects (bird-oids), representing the beauty of their movements in a flock which is a result of balancing out with each other, following the principle of least effort. I wonder if these rules can be applied to the way a string quartet is shaped. Boids again has been written as a sequel to the piece Boids (2017), a 4 minute study for string quartet in the frame of the Kronos Quartet's educational project 50 for the Future.
