With a typical performance lasting around seven minutes, Aubain's piece includes use of Timpani, Xylophone, Temple-Block, Tom-Toms, Vibraphone and Cymbals, as well as other Percussion instruments. This is effectively a work in three movements - Allegro, Andante cantabile and Presto - which Davies likens to 'three obstacle courses, bristling with technical difficulties'. However, as he goes on to say, 'young people are naturally gifted with extraordinary rhythmic skills which normally remain untapped'. Given the opportunity, older children have here the material for a highly arresting piece of music-making. Scoring also includes a small wood block, a small temple block and a small suspended cymbal. The xylophones are one each of the following: concert, soprano, alto and bass. The two glockenspiels are soprano and alto and the metallophones are bass and deep bass (a vibraphone may be used instead of the latter). These studies will provide a challenge to all percussionists, for whom there is a distinct shortage of suitable studies. Duration c. 5mins.

These Three Studies for Four-handed Piano were conceived of as a triptych whose unifying principles were to be the first-slow-fast movement order of the classical sonata and a symmetrical arrangement of tonalities with A major occupying the centre (F minor- A major- C minor). The term Studies alludes not so much to the 19th century pedagogical concept of pieces-as-exercises, as to an attempt to extend, investigate and study the possibilities of expression and texture of the piano for four hands. The First Study is generated out of a single rhythmical motif whose development is modified by the intervention of two contrapuntual passages. A certain difficulty of execution arising from the need to cross hands in both sections of the keyboard conforms, in this case, to the traditional definition of study as an exercise focussed on a specific technical problem. The second piece might be defined as a study of expression, being the explicit disposition of an ostinato accompaniment and two superior voices in conversation. I cannot help, listening to this study, being reminded of the texture of the slow Largo of Bach's Concerto for 2 violins and the manifest pathos of the Andante of Prokofiev's 2nd Violin Concerto. The Third Study is an exercise in rhythmical interpenetration in which continual changes of accentuation and metre are combined with passages of a light and mellifluous character. It is a long-standing ambition of mine to supplement this work with three more triptychs and, so, complete a set of twelve studies for four-handed piano.

French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Three Pastorales for Flute Trio in 1964. As with his other wind compositions, Three Pastorales was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learned during the summers with his Grandmother in to his compositions. The Three Pastorales are named; 1) Bolivian, 2) Cretan, and 3) Sicilienne. This Tomasi piece is suitable to an advanced Flute Trio, providing an exciting alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire..

Three Faces is a set of three pieces for Piano written by Odette Gartenlaub. These pieces are considered challenging and difficult and would fit advanced players. Very melodic, each of these three pieces covers 2 pages and they can be played separately. Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1948, Odette Gartenlaub (1922-2014) has written various works for orchestra, chamber ensemble and solo instruments such as 'For the Horn', 'Seven Little studies' or 'Five easy pieces for Flute and Piano' among others..
