X'Three (2003/2021) by Olli Koskelin is the third piece of a solo cello suite consisting of seven compositions. Each of the seven pieces can be performed individually or detached with other X'-compositions. Different works are yet to be performed chronologically. The X'-works are composed by using the same material viewed from many different angles. Their structure can be seen as a film starting several times from the beginning and from the same settings always looked from a new perspective. In some compositions of the X'-suite seemingly random fragments are joined together organically in other works of the suite. The story, tale, or plot of the music and the gestures and figures of it trans-form in a new context but remain identifiable.Olli Koskelin's (born 16 April 1955) compositional output reflects a wide range of interests. The vast area covered by his style encompasses the neo-impressionism of the piano work Courbures (1989) to the post-expressionist echoes of his Music for String Quartet (1981) as well as the breakneck virtuosity of his clarinet piece Exalte (1985/1991) and the rich romantic textures of his orchestral piece ... like a planet silently breathing... (1993). He often uses the overtone series like the French spectral composers and avoids dramatic culmination. Soft harmonics, tranquil arching melodies, a leisurely rhythmical pulse and a coherence of mood are in evidence in his later works as in Uurre (1997) for chamber ensemble, Miniatures (1997) for string quartet and Circles within for 19 solo strings.

Hints of Bach’s solo violin music occasionally infuse Hailstork’s modernist side, creating a fascinating drama in this three-movement suite for solo violin. While overall in a fast-slow-fast form, each movement is a world in itself with engaging contrasts, pacing, and textures within the solo instrument.

Martin Amlin’s new tour de force is a quintet composed for Leone Buyse. It is a study in textures and canonic gestures scored for 5 C Flutes, each doubling Piccolo. As with his rhythmic writing, Amlin’s movement titles are engagingly cryptic yet meaningful: 1. Apparatus, 2. Mirémi, 3. Spiral Canon. Ideal for advanced and professional flutists, the work’s intricacies create an exhilarating ten minutes.THREE INVENTIONS was premiered at Boston University on April 14, 2019 by flutists/piccoloists Matthew Lee, Jessie Wang, Courtney Regester, Pauline Jung, and Alyssa Primeau. The piece is dedicated to the composer’s longtime friend Leone Buyse.Apparatus is a little musical machine whose engine is driven by the interval of a perfect fifth. Fifths combine with each other in increasingly larger intervals in a repetitive pattern that appears at higher pitch levels with each iteration.Mirémi is constructed loosely on an ostinato consisting of the notes D and E. The two notes are passed back and forth among the instruments, combining with symmetrical patterns of faster notes.Spiral Canon is a continuous canon throughout among the five instruments. It not only spirals upward in register, but is also constantly “modulating,†spiraling twice through the entire circle of fifths.— Martin Amlin.

These three pieces were first performed by the Birmingham Brass Ensemble under Timothy Reynish. The first features noble melodies over held chords, until the final section breaks into a series of polyphonic entries of the theme over a tuba pedal note. The second piece is contrapuntal from the start, and uses the differing textures of muted and unmuted brass instruments to create atmosphere. The final piece makes use of repeated, driving figures accompanying an epic theme first introduced in the French Horn.

For SATB with divisions, unaccompanied This setting of texts from Cymbeline and The Merchant of Venice, and Sonnet 98, is characterised by inventive textures and vibrant word-setting. The harmonic language is mostly diatonic but never plain, and there are pungent dissonances in the music of evocative power.

Inspired by so-called minimalist ostinato music thriving on fast textures with slow, luscious harmony, Dorff found this an enticing approach to composing for marimbas. The work was simultaneously premiered in late 1985 by Nachiko Maekane on the East Coast, and by Brian Prechtl and Hitoshi Maeda on the West Coast. Each dance etude has a characteristic interval and ostinato rhythm, and may be performed by any number of players.

These jazz arrangements of well-known hymns were written for Andrew Earis and choirs of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London for various services and BBC broadcasts from that church. The setting of “Come down, O Love divine†supplies some new harmonic moves to Vaughan Williams' lovely tune “Down Ampneyâ€, gradually adding vocal harmony through the verses, with a short descant section in the final verse. The compound-time arrangement of “God Is Love,†which can also be sung to the supplied words of Charles Wesley's hymn “Love Divine,†again adds more of Todd's iconic jazz harmonies and textures in the vocal parts with each successive verse. The setting of “Let all mortal flesh keep silence†is structured to gradually build layers over the moody piano chords and the pedal harmony. At the end the music builds to a large climax for the text “Lord most highâ€. The hymns can be performed using the supplied piano part or using the chord symbols above. Double bass may also be used in addition to piano, again following the supplied chord symbols, and parts for optional jazz ensemble are available. Performers of these hymns should feel free to include the congregation or audience in imaginative ways.
