For cello and piano. “This work was the result of a collaboration with my wonderful friend, the outstanding cellist Julius Berger. Several years ago, his exceptional interpretation of my Concerto for violin and violoncello impressed me deeply. Later, when he played my 2nd Sonata for violoncello solo, a work written for him, my enthusiasm became even greater. In my new piece, composed on the occasion of his 60th birthday, I intended to write kind of music in which not only virtuosity but also a beautiful sound should stand at the forefront. Above all, however, I wanted to please Julius with it and also give enjoyment to the audience. The title 'three times four' describes the basic idea of the work: three musical characters are varied in four different respective forms. Or put the other way round: four characteristic sound designs appear in three different shapes. It is difficult to say more about the piece than that. My ideal is music that is sufficient unto itself, a kind of music that requires no commentary - that itself says so much that all commentary becomes superfluous.†(Krzysztof Meyer).

Notes: This composition was completed in September of 1978. It was written for the Kappelle Woodwind Trio, who performed it many times including in Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City. I am particularly proud of this work, because it was the first truly mature work that I had written. Much like a good novel where every character introduced is developed and completed, every motif that was introduced was developed at some point in this work. When I say developed, I do not mean in the way Mozart, Beethoven, or other classical composers worked their motives in the development section, running through different keys and tonalities. In this work, I let the motives spin their way into longer themes or just show up in a different or disguised way. For example, a motif introduced in the first movement receives its final development in the final of the fourth movement. I hope the audience enjoys listening to this composition, and of course, the performers enjoy exploring and playing my music. Thank you! - Randy Navarre.Notes:This composition was completed in September of 1978. Richard Ayres' Three Small Pieces for String Quartet each have distinct characters that illustrate the composer's vivid imagination and skill for combining energetic, touching and sometimes wild music. The first piece is a short tribute to the Romanian singer Maria Tanase, a long forgotten performer who was once a star in her country. The second is a rough, fast and folk-like section in 11/16 time and the third, subtitled 'Countess Eva von Spendu (on a horse) gallops through the forest (pausing four times to contemplate natural splendour)', contains (in the words of the composer) 'hunting gallops, a Feldmanesque 19 bar blues, some devilish fiddling, moments of repose and contemplation, and a lyrical finale.'.

The Bully in the Band Adventures with Music Book 4 World War II is over, and now a young musician must learn to fight his own battles... Just as quickly as the storm had arrived, it moved down the valley and away from the fort. The first light of morning peaked under the departing clouds. As the sky cleared, so did Dale’s mind. He knew exactly what he had to do. He opened the door to the fort, and what he saw confirmed the power of the storm. The lightening split Scout’s favorite tree down the middle, the two halves forming the letter Y. Dale paused. This is a sign. This is the fork in the road. He had a choice of which fork to take: either face his issues with the first-chair trumpet player or continue to be manipulated and bullied for the rest of his life. This book is not only about the life and times of a gang of seventh-grade musicians and friends, but is also a story about bullying in and out of school. Stepping Up is a compelling story for kids, and it is also a wonderful book for parents, teachers, counselors, or anyone concerned with bullying and its consequences.-—Dr. Carroll GonzoUniversity of St. ThomasDale’s concentration was broken when Jim leaned over and whispered, I can’t wait to watch you clutch like you did at your auditions. You do remember you messed up two different times. Get ready for mess up numbers three and four. Dale realized that it was the time to take on Jim. As Jim turned forward, Dale leaned over, reached into his shirt, pulling out Scout’s two dog tags that he always wore on a chain around his neck. I don’t think so, Jim. I know what you did and how you did it. Does this look familiar? Dale said as he held up a pink eraser dangling on the chain with the dog tags. Jim’s face turned white. I think, Jim, it’s time I erased the past and show you what a real leader plays like.

Brahms' Piano Symphony in the Urtext of the complete editionJohannes Brahms enjoyed a bit of understatement every now and then, and whenever his second piano concerto was the object of discussion, he called it his little concerto - although it was more than clear that, with its four movements (including Scherzo), he was giving his contemporaries something truly symphonic to chew on. The press didn't hesitate long: soon it was being derisively called piano symphony, which, however, did nothing to prevent its popularity. Brahms himself and other pianists played the work everywhere in the 1880s, and the piano reduction was so successful that it had to be reprinted three times within three months after its first printing. The Urtext edition follows the text of the respective volume in the Brahms Complete Edition published in 2013. It takes the first printing of the score as the main source; moreover, both the autograph as well as the printed reduction provided further information with which engraving errors of the first edition could be corrected.

Certainly Robert Schumann was right when he stated soon after Beethoven's death that the latter's conception of the symphony as a great, universal confessional work was hardly to be continued by the next generation of composers. He saw a solution to the dilemma in the creation of autonomous concert overtures, such as those written, for instance, by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Four of his overtures were printed during his lifetime, and others were extant in manuscript, though frequently and successfully performed by the composer. Belonging to the latter group is the Trumpet Overture, begun in 1825 and performed three times between 1828 und 1833 on prominent occasions in Berlin, Dusseldorf, and London.First printing posthumously 1851 (Rietz).
