This SSAA work, originally written for SATB voices celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Masterworks Community Chorale in Newnan, Georgia. The inspirational text is Somewhere I Have Never Traveled, a text by the Yale Theologian, Thomas Troeger. Somewhere I Have Never Traveled has potential for building tone and creating a panorama of colors, while at the same time creating emotional soundscapes, all through a delightful text that creates a dreamlike innocence.
It has been a joy to re-voice this original SATB composition for SSAA voices and to collaborate with Heather Orr at Montgomery High School. In July 2014, my dear friend Kathy Bizarth commissioned me to compose a new work celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Masterworks Community Chorale in Newnan, Georgia. It was in September when we agreed on the inspirational text, Somewhere I Have Never Traveled, a text by the Yale Theologian, Thomas Troeger. I moved to Italy in January for a sabbatical, and in February, I spent four days composing the piece at the Palazzo Bassi Brugnatelli, a dear friend's villa in Robbiate, Italy. Interestingly enough, the middle part of the piece (mm. 30-39) and end of the piece came first (mm. 40-62). Completed in Conegliano in late February, this composition is very special to me as it was the first composition I wrote after my mother died, and it was also composed for a dear friend. I have a profound connection to what I hope will be a deeply inspirational composition to those who sing it. Mit großer Dankbarkeit blicke ich auf ein Dezennium beglückender Zusammenarbeit mit der Stiftskirche Banz zurück. Zehnmal in Folge war es mit vergönnt, an den Banzer Orgelkonzerten teilzunehmen. Gern nutze ich diesen Anlass, den Veranstaltern im Jahr des 300. Konsekrationsjubiläums mit einem eigenen Beitrag meinen Dank abzustatten. Die so entstandene Liturgische Suite berücksichtigt die katholische Messliturgie in zweierlei Hinsicht. Zum einen werden Lieder aus dem katholischen Gesangbuch Gotteslob verarbeitet. Zum anderen sind mit Präludium, Gabenbereitung, Kommunion und Nachspiel jene Stellen belegt, die eine freiere Gestaltung inner- wie außerhalb einzelner Festkreise gestatten. Das Nachspiel ist dem österlichen Jubel der Gottesmutter Maria gewidmet. Schließlich nutzt die Registrierung und Führung der Manuale die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten der großen Orgel der Banzer Stiftskirche in besonderer Weise. (Lothar Graap).

In my opinion our world is currently in great need of reestablishing strong connections one to another, be it with family and friends, neighbors and strangers, nations and nations, or with those of different cultures and religions. In his important book, I and Thou, philosopher-theologian Martin Buber says that the most meaningful life is centered on relationship. As a musician, I felt compelled to express the I-THOU thesis through the human voice. In searching for the right words to express this sentiment, I was fortunate to find Kazuaki Tanahashi’s eloquent poem, “Encounter.” Mr. Tanahashi is a poet, Zen artist, scholar and peace activist.  This combined-voices version has been adapted from an SATB scoring that features prominently in the original song cycle, I-THOU, written for vocal quartet, commissioned and premiered in 2018 by Fourth Coast Ensemble in Chicago. —Wayland Rogers About the Series: Doreen Rao, 2019 Robert Shaw Award recipient, launches her culturally inclusive choral series, Global Encounters for Young Voices, featuring accessible treble- and mixed-voice works for developing choirs.
