This 1963 setting of three well-known folksongs honours the melody line in the Soprano while adding brilliant texture and accompaniment in the clarinet and Piano. In Johnny Has Gone For A Soldier McCabe moves his harmonies away from the certainty of the minor tune for an intriguing dislocation that reflects the loss in the lyrics. In the lullabye Hush-A-Ba Birdie Croon Croon the clarinet provides a rippling undertone to the singer while D’Ye Ken John Peel carries as much musical acknowledgement of the ‘death in the morning’ as it does the romping ‘hounds and Horn’.Contemporary British musician John McCabe has been a prolific composer since his earliest years and an activepianist recording extensively and performing across the globe. His compositions tend toward large scale works there are seven symphonies so far but he has composed for every size and type of ensemble. He is particularly well known for his concerti.

In the words of Jamaican musicologist Marjorie Whylie, Jamaican folk songs are full of social commentary, censure, and recrimination in a vehicle of humor. This publication includes three charming arrangements for a cappella singers and percussion. One describes a comical scene at a train station; a second playfully questions a neighbor about some missing food; and the third (complete with simple instructions to recreate a ringplay game) cheers a naughty cousin who threw his aunt's coat out the window. A printed guide and online video provide vetted learning tools for the Patois language. Unique, authentic, fun!

Songs from Across the Water was commissioned by Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds - Phil Evans, Founder and Director. Phil Evans hails from the UK and served for 25 years in the Band of HM Royal Marines. Now resident in the USA he founded Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds in 2008, giving them the tag line ‘An American Band with a British Accent’, as he wanted to combine the best of both countries’ band traditions. With this in mind, composer Philip Sparke decided to create a suite of British folk songs, scored with an American influence to fulfil the philosophy of the band’s tag line. The three movements, which are played without a break, are based on the following folk songs, which come from all corners of the British Isles: The Three Ravens & The Cruiskeen Lawn, The Lark in the Clear Air and The Piper o’ Dundee & Men of Harlech. Les troismouvements qui s’enchaînent reposent sur les trois chansons folkloriques suivantes, qui viennent de tous les coins des Îles Britanniques : The Three Ravens & The Cruiskeen Lawn, The Lark in the Clear Air et The Piper o’ Dundee & Men of Harlech.

The Folk Songs choral collection explores the musical world of Great Britain and Ireland. It contains 21 arrangements of English-language verse songs, canons, and ballads for mixed unaccompanied chorus. The folk songs are as diverse as the stories they tell: from the moving Greensleeves and Two hearts beat as one, through charming settings such as A rosebud by my early walk and There were three ravens, to saucy and tongue-in-cheek songs such as Dashing away with the smoothing iron and The mother-in-law. The stylistic treatment is very varied: the collection contains both original settings from the 13th century as well as arrangements specially commissioned from contemporary composers for the collection. The settings are in three to five parts, and the vocal parts sometimes divide. They are by well-known British and Irish composers such as Benjamin Britten, Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Charles Villiers Stanford, as well as contemporary composers such as John Rutter and Carsten Gerlitz - who give a new twist to these traditional songs. Calmus Ensemble has recorded six arrangements from this collection for their CD Folk Songs (Carus 83.034).
