5 Tributes piano

Edward Gregson completed Tributes in the summer of 2010. Lasting some 16 minutes, there are five pieces in the set, each dedicated to a different composer and a different clarinettist (with whom Gregson had long musical associations). Each of the dedicatee composers wrote wonderfully for the Clarinet and, as a tribute to them, Gregson tried to invade, indeed imitate, their stylistic worlds in these pieces. They are as follows: To Francis Poulenc (for Emma Johnson) - a rather dreamy toccata, lyrical in feel, but interrupted by typically quirky and disruptive rhythmic episodes. To Gerald Finzi (for John Bradbury) - slow and lyrical with long melodic arches. To Igor Stravinsky (for Linda Merrick) - asymmetric rhythms dominate, with wide leaps in the solo line and bitonal harmony on the Piano. To Olivier Messiaen (for Nicholas Cox) - based on the ravishing slow movement for Cello in his Quartet for the End of Time, a seamless melody is woven around ever-changing repeated chords on the Piano. To Béla Bartók (for Michael Collins) - the most virtuoso of the set - after a slow introduction, a swirling folk-like dance unfolds, mirroring Bartok's penchant for simple modal shapes and ostinati rhythms. / Clarinette Et Piano

Geoffrey Bush’s Tributes is a suite of five respectful pieces for B Flat Clarinet and Piano accompaniment. These varied pieces encompassing Jazz Blues and Rhumba styles were completed in 1986 and have each been dedicated to a friend an associate or a contemporary of the composer.

Contemporary works for violin and piano. Par . Fennica Gehrman the music publisher pays tribute to its composers with this 20th-anniversary collection of commissions for violin and piano. Stringendo - Contemporary works for violin and piano (2022) is a collection of ten pieces, which vary greatly as regards their genesis. That by Harri Wessman is playful and exhilarating; Mikko Heiniö wrote his on Women's Day, while the duets by Kalevi Aho and Matthew Whittall are tributes to the late Jaakko Kuusisto. Einojuhani Rautavaara is also represented, in an arrangement for violin and piano of his plaintive, melodic Sydämeni laulu (The Song of my Heart). The title of Lotta Wennäkoski's work, Vestige, is a fitting symbol for the whole collection. The title has been taken from a review of Robert Schumann of the then newly published Préludes Op. 28. According to this reference, Stefan Heucke's Préludes are tributes to the three great piano composers of the 19th century: Chopin, Liszt and Schumann. By tradition, each of Heucke's 12 Préludes starts from a different keynote while attempting, however, to use major and minor modes at the same time in constantly new combinations. / Piano

Vier Klavierkompositionen für Kinder-The set of four Piano pieces for children titled Jaro V Zahrade (Spring In The Garden) H. 125 by Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) is here published in a new edition.The composer's autograph is missing today and therefore the editor Ales Brezina (whose changes are indicated in the musical text with square brackets) limited himself to correcting several obvious errors. He has retained the fingering suggested by Vilém Kurz who prepared the first edition.Perhaps the most visible change from earlier editions is omission of the titles of individual pieces in the set because it is very likely that they are not the invention of the composerbut rather were added later by the publisher or someone else.The Piano texture is simple and takes into consideration the instructive intention of the work whose greatest attributes are its lyricism and playfulness.Preface by the editor is published in four languages (Cz./Eng./Ger./Fr.).

Contemporary French saxophonist Philippe Portejoie studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. Composed in 2007  Petite Complainte for Alto Saxophone and Piano contributes to a significant collection of compositions by Portejoie. A typical performance of Petite Complainte lasts around three minutes and explores features including a wide range complex rhythms chromaticism ornamentation and variations in performance directions amongst other aspects. For all aspiring advanced saxophonists Portejoie's Petite Complainte is essentialto an exciting varied repertoire.

Le premier cahier des Vexierbilder (1991) (Vexierbild se traduirait par attrape , rébus ) exploitait l'idée d'image trompeuse, de référent décalé, se concentrant autour d'un matériau délibérément appauvri. Dans ces trois nouvelles pièces, la musique cherche à se construire autour d'un geste, d'une figuration systématique, d'une forme coupant court à tout développement.

Dans une veine années de pèlerinage , Rome était la matière des images cryptées des trois premiers Vexierbilder. C'est l'art du poète américain Wallace Stevens qui est au centre de ceux-ci, et plus particulièrement son premier recueil Harmonium (paru en 1923), où il tente de trouver, avec des moyens resserrés, le caractère transcendant inhérent à la musique (Claire Malroux). En somme : remplacer le grand orgue de la poésie, devenu inadapté, par un instrument moins noble en apparence, dont le souffle et la portée naîtraient d'une activité têtue, concentrée mais presque dérisoire.

Pratiquant les rappels sacrés, parfois ironiques, Wallace Stevens (1879-1955), par un jeu de degrés étourdissant de raffinement, a porté au plus haut l'art de faire du neuf avec la mémoire.

Speech of clouds
Deux notes - une simple tierce do-la dans le médium - sont sollicitées par une navette de deux mains qui n'en seraient qu'une, sans chant ni harmonie, et sonnent comme un carillon brouillé. Dans la seconde partie de la pièce, après un court récitatif sorti de silence, ces trajectoires virtuoses, ces fusées d'artificier pour solo de concert , régressent, involuent vers une formule égrenée simplement par les cinq doigts, en ombre, ppppp possibile, comme une trame usée, ou un envers montrant la pauvreté de ses noeuds - et de ses ficelles - sur laquelle, au même endroit du clavier, vient se poser un contre-chant, comme si ces deux mains du médium n'appartenaient plus alors au même corps - invention rebrodée ton sur ton où une voix contrepointe l'autre par soustraction.

...An uncertain green,
Piano-polished, held the tranced machine
Of ocean, as a prelude holds of holds.

Negation
Pièce lente qui revient à cet arte povera cherché dans le premier recueil des Vexierbilder. L'objet harmonique est ici donné dans une grande nudité, comme une anti-figure dont le caractère obvi se retournerait en ambiguïté interrogative, et à partir duquel plusieurs ostinati se construisent, s'épuisent sans développement, écho au poème éponyme de Stevens : Hé ! Le Créateur aussi est aveugle / Qui cherche à bâtir son harmonieux ensemble, / Rejetant les parties intermédiaires, / Les horreurs, les faussetés et les maux, / Maître incapable de toute puissance, / Trop vague idéaliste, submergé / Par un souffle qui persiste.

Rondo
Une courte séquence construit la pièce en refrains, comme le titre l'indique, empruntant au contre-chant de la première pièce. Certaines strophes font entendre un précipité des ostinati de la seconde pièce, mais rejetés dans les extrêmes du clavier. Est-ce alors le grave qui vient orner, fouetter l'aigu à contre-emploi? Ces agrégats doivent sonner comme des sacs de grains lâchés par terre. C'est comme un tribut déposé au pied de la rhétorique, un geste d'embrassement qui voudrait naïvement fermer le ban du pianisme. D'autres strophes, plus fugitives, font entendre des sortes de chants d'oiseaux dont la mécanique se serait bloquée. Après un dernier retour du refrain, ourlé de résonances, la pièce se termine par une clausule dansante, livide, itérative, pendant aux Jeux d'os squelettiques qui achevaient les premiers Vexierbilder :

Mow the grass in tue cemetery, darkies,
Study the symbols and the requiescats,
But leave a bed beneath the myrtles.
The skeleton had a daughter and that, a son.

And that one was never a man of heart.
The making of his son was one more duty.
