The opening of this unique and masterful work for band places the wind players out in the audience as the listeners are surrounded by the effect of a swirling dance of celestial lights and sounds. Onstage the percussion sectionintroduces a driving ostinato pattern later picked up by the entire ensemble. A delicate and beautiful middle section almost suspends time as soloists provide a bluesy interaction with the rich background texture and each other.The frantic pace returns leading to a stunning chorale played by the winds while the percussion continues simultaneously at a separate tempo! POD-Richard Allain's The Magi's Gifts for SATB choir unaccompanied. This work was commissioned by Merton College Oxford as part of the Merton Choirbook a collection of music being assembled to celebrate Merton College's 750th anniversary in 2014. The Magi's Gifts was first performed on 19th January 2014 in Merton College Chapel by the Choir of Merton College conducted by Benjamin Nicholas. How poor the gifts we offered How precious those we received.   'The music is unaccompanied in six parts (two soprano lines and a baritone line enrich the harmony) quite slow and with rich harmony requiring fine tuning from the choir. Four Pieces For Orchestra was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2000-2003. Programme note: In 1983 Hans Abrahamsen wrote the first seven of his Ten Studies for Piano. In the early eighties most composers who wrote for the piano were still making strenuous efforts to distance themselves from the instrument?s romantic past for example treating it as a percussion instrument rather than exploiting its expressive ?singing? potential. The piano?s modern identity as a mechanical rational emotionally cool instrument is reflected in Abrahamsen?s studies 5 7; but in the first four studies Abrahamsen allows the piano to?recollect? its past: especially what the composer calls ?the golden German romantic time full of expression night timelessness dream and the irrational?. Accordingly these first four studies were given German one might specifically say Schumanesque - titles: Traumlied (?Dreamsong?) Sturm (?Storm?) Arabeske (?Arabesque?) and Ende (?End?). While Abrahamsen was in no way dissatisfied with the first four Studies as piano music he soon felt the urge to expand them in both time and space. In their new identity as Four Pieces for Orchestra created between 2000-2003 the original studies nearly doubled in length while the forces required expanded from one soloist to an orchestra of Mahlerian/Straussian dimensions including instruments beloved by the late-romantics: Wagner tubas bass trumpet guitar mandolin and the hammer used so memorably in Mahler?s Sixth Symphony and Alban Berg?s Three Pieces for Orchestra. The results are not so much ?arrangements? of the four piano studies more recompositions. A helpful comparison might be made with certain painters: Cézanne portraying the same mountain from different angles; or Monet obsessively returning to Rouen Cathedral in different lights and weather conditions. Abrahamsen himself remembers an important visit to the Munch Museum in Oslo where he saw how Munch painted the same subject

The composer states:'The term 'oblique strategies? was coined jointly by British musician Brian Eno and German-born British visual artist Peter Schmidt to describe a series of printed cards they developed throughout the 1970's. The cards had their origins in sets of uncannily similar working principles that both artists had established independently, and featured aphorisms intended as a means of triggering inspiration or providing useful stimulus during the creative process, particularly when encountering difficulties of fatigue or time constraint.As Eno and Schmidt wrote in their introduction to the first edition in 1975: 'They can be used as a pack (a set of possibilities being continuously reviewed in the mind) or by drawing a single card from the shuffled pack when a dilemma occurs in a working situation. In this case, the card is trusted even if its appropriateness is quite unclear. They are not final, as new ideas will present themselves, and others will become self-evident?.I chose eleven of Eno and Schmidt's strategies, ordering them in a way that revealed to me a logic and potential inter-relatedness within a hitherto disparate set of single ideas I had assembled for solo cello, each of them in turn a reflection upon the commission's initial purpose of creating a test piece for the 2014 Emanuel Feuermann cello competition.It's my hope then that the resultant composition may provide not only an interesting test of the competitors' talents but also offer the interpreter an opportunity to reflect upon the delights and pitfalls of creativity as he or she comes to terms with the various musical and technical challenges to be found within these ten minutes of music for solo cello.? / Violoncelle

OpenSax – the title of this collection should appeal to all saxophonists who seek to explore new directions while keeping an eye on the current musical scene. Claude Georgel director of the Vent de Sax collection took advantage of a festive occasion – the 17th World Saxophone Congress and Festival in July 2015 – to ask nine composers from very different backgrounds to write pieces either joyful or poetic. The idea was to allow instrumentalists (starting year two of Alto Saxophone study) to explore a variety of artistic and technical worlds guided by the pure joy of playing. It’s a thrilling adventure: British composer JohnHarle draws on the Sanskrit symbol Yantra to weave magical connections between soloist and electroacoustics. Sophie Lacaze turns young saxophonists into Oriental storytellers as they celebrate through deft plays on keys the thousand shards of La Lune dans l’Eau. Vincent-Raphaël Carinola takes musicians into the dreamlike mechanism of the Montre molle so dear to Dali.
