The eighteenth century saw a great increase in secular music for solo voice and continuo set to texts in Venetian, which was then a recognized literary language, not a mere dialect of Italian. Most of these compositions are short gondola songs or canzonettas, but a few are cantatas in several movements indistinguishable from their counterparts with Italian texts except in language and subject matter, which favours contemporary themes treated in a comic manner. The two Venetian cantatas for soprano and continuo by Diogenio Bigaglia (1678–1745) published here for the first time – they are probably the first of their type ever to appear in a modern edition – are excellently crafted examples of their type, revealing an unexpectedly racy side of their composer, a Benedictine monk. One is a set of instructions for a shopping trip given by a nun to her aged servant, and the other is a woman’s catty description of the rise from rags to riches of one of her neighbours through prostitution. The editions come with translations of the texts and a brief note on the pronunciation of Venetian.

Barenreiter's publication of a new volume of theWorks of Gioachino Rossini, in collaboration with the Center for Italian Opera Studies at the University of Chicago, makes available an edition of the operaIl barbiere di Sivigliawhich meets modern demands. The editors have recently identified numerous carelessly edited places in the last critical edition by referring to additional sources. The greatest changes relate to the overture; for the new edition, no fewer than twenty different autograph manuscripts have been consulted. A detailed appendix containing alternative vocal parts, advice on ornamentation and compositions by Rossini significant in the performance history of the opera complete the volume. A 420-page Critical Commentary is published separately. With this, a critical edition is now available to interpreters, enabling them to perform Rossini's ,,Barber of Sevillewith the greatest possible confidence in the accuracy of the musical material. The performance material is available on hire, and a vocal score will be published at the end of 2009. An early (1938) non-spatial work by Henry Brant, whose Ice Field won the Pulitzer Prize for Music, Whoopee in D is scored for a modestlysized orchestra of single winds, 2 clarinets, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, trombone, piano, percussion (1 player) and strings. The piece satirizes the standard light opera/musical comedy type of overture. The composer describes it as the prelude to a comic-strip opera as revealed in a nightmare. In a brief and rollicking four minutes, Brant takes a fragment of Bach's accompanying melody from the choral prelude Wachet auf! (also familiar from its use in Cantata No. 140) and subjects it to several clever parody-variations in polka, rumba and march style. A tour de force for a chamber orchestra, Whoopee in D has always been a great audience pleaser. Orchestral parts are available on rental.

The Country of Larks by Julian Philips is a miniature cantata for Tenor, Horn and Piano that investigates an epiphanous moment of connection with nature. The text was extracted and reassembled from Robert Louis Stevenson's An Autumn Effect, an 1875 essay that describes an autumnal hike through the Chilterns, philosophical, comical and poignant by turns. Stevenson's narrative framework is filleted into a short sequence of short recitative and arioso sections, culminating in an extended musical response to his fascination for the larks. The Country of Larks was commissioned by the 2021 Oxford Lieder Festival, on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary and was premiered at the 2022 edition of the festival on 25 October 2022 by Stuart Jackson (Tenor), Jocelyn Freeman (Piano) and George Strivens (Horn). This edition is published as part of the Peters Contemporary Chamber Series.
