Two Daughters is a flowing and impassioned composition dedicated to the composer's daughters that gives the young string orchestra ample chances to display its lyrical abilities. Several solo passages vary the texture, which displays Alan Lee Silva's usual flair for lush contemporary harmonic writing.From the poignant, heartwarming violin melody at m. 5, to the soaring ensemble climax at m. 61, Two Daughters is a flowing, lyrical composition with a wide dynamic range. Written in AABA form with a bridge, the delicate introduction sets up a legato violin solo at m. 5. The piece builds to the singing B-section (m. 21) and returns again to the gentle A-melody (m. 29). The cello is featured in m. 37 under a soft, high string sustain. Two modulations (mm. 37 and 52) move seamlessly and build excitement to the bridge, highlighted by alternating melodic phrases. The slower ending section (m.69) is played with intensity, featuring more sixteenth-note passages. The final two measures return to the sweet, gentle feeling of the introduction.

Daughters of Erin was commissioned by and dedicated to the University of Notre Dame Concert Band, Dr. Ken Dye, director. It was composed in 2020 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first women to be admitted into the Notre Dame Concert Band. The university was an all-male school from its founding in 1842. The Notre Dame Band was formed during the 1845-46 academic year. The university became co-educational with the admission of women in 1972. Two years earlier, in 1970, the band director Robert F. O'Brien, secured permission for women from nearby St. Mary's College (the official sister school of Notre Dame) to be part of the Notre Dame Band. Appropriate to the theme of Daughters of Erin, selections include The Bells of St. Mary's, I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen, and two Irish Jigs: Girls of Our Town and The Women of Kilkenny. Daughters of Erin celebrates all the women who have performed in the University of Notre Dame Band for the past fifty years, and all who will follow in their footsteps in the years to come. Simon Laks (1901-1983), who moved from Warsaw to Paris in 1926 at the age of 25, belonged to the large group of composers from Central and Eastern European countries who went down in 20th-century music history as the “École de Parisâ€. Slavic temperament amalgamated in their music with French esprit, the folklore of their native countries combined with the stylistic elements of neoclassicism and jazz typical of the time. As a member of the “Association of Young Polish Musiciansâ€, Laks quickly made his way into French musical life. However, his career was ended with the beginning of World War 2 due to the collaboration of the Vichy government with Nazi Germany. Internment in 1941 was followed by deportation to Auschwitz in 1942. Laks survived the Shoah as a member and later leader of a camp band in Birkenau, which he testified to in his moving book Music in Auschwitz. After the traumatic experiences, Laks did not return to regular compositional activity until the 1960s, producing an opera, songs, and chamber music works, some of which were awarded important composition prizes. At the peak of this optimistic creative phase, he composed incidental music for Peretz Hirschbein's famous Yiddish comedy Dem Schmids Techter (The Blacksmith's Daughters), which premiered in New York in 1918, for a new production of the play at the Théâtre de'lÂ’Entrepôt in Paris. Along with Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes and Shostakovich's cycle From Yiddish (Jewish) Folk Poetry, it is one of the most significant 20th-century explorations of art music with Jewish folklore – homage to a culture irreparably destroyed. From the original score, Holger Groschopp compiled two suites, for violoncello and piano and piano solo, that capture the essence of Lak's enchanting drama music. The premiere recording of the suites with Holger Groschopp and Adele Bitter was awarded the Opus Klassik 2023 in the category Editorial Achievement of the Year.
