Charles Gounod, the 200th anniversary of whose birth falls in 2018, is known above all for his operas - Faust, Sapho, Romeo et Juliette, etc. But throughout his life Gounod was also a very religious man. As winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1839, he spent an extended period in the Holy City and subsequently devoted several years exclusively to writing sacred music. For a time he even thought of becoming a priest and signed his letters Abbe Ch. Gounod. As well as several masses - including the famous St Cecilia Mass - he composed numerous smaller works for various scorings for use in the liturgy and other church services. This collection contains 20 smaller sacred motets for 4-6-part mixed choir with organ or piano accompaniment, mostly ad libitum.

This volume is devoted to Byrd's Latin sacred works which have survived only in manuscript sources. Its contents range from those motets such as Alleluya. Confitemini Domino judged to be among the composer's earliest, to works of the 1560s - Ad Dominum cum tribularer for example - and two later cantus firmus respond motets that may also be dated to this period.

Influenced by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, the Irish composer Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) developed an English Romantic musical language of his own. This is noticeable especially in his three Latin motets in which a typically 'English' tone prevails, characterized by extremely flowing melodies, smooth harmonies and great singability. These three compositions are perfect for church services and concerts. Contents: Iustorum animae • Coelos ascendit hodie • Beati quorum via.

The three Latin Motets from the late 1880s have long been a standard repertoire of British choirs and have often been recorded on CD. And yet, although the Anglo-Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford is no longer unknown in Germany, they remain an insider's tip. The motets are true miniatures of a cappella music. Due to their fine motivic structure, effective antiphonal groupings, and clear harmonics, they produce tremendous sound effects in a small space. Separate editions are available.

Volume 9 completes the collection of Byrd's Latin sacred works from the late 1570s onwards preserved in manuscript alone. It includes Domine, exaudi orationem meam, which is published for the first time in fully reconstructed form. Philippe de Monte's partial Psalm 136 setting, Super flumina Babylonis, to which Byrd's Quomodo cantabimus (here appearing for the first time with text correctly underlaid) was a musical response, features in the appendices, together with the fragmentary Ad punctum in modico and a number of motets putatively ascribed to the composer, but judged unlikely to be by him.

The composer wrote of his work as follows: The text of the three motets takes three motifs from the story of the birth of Jesus: (1) the joy of the Magi at seeing the Star, (2) Mary s cradle song as she rocks the Baby, and (3) the choir of Angels praising the joyful news in song. The movements may also be performed singly, but it is best for them to be heard together as a cycle. Their style and tonal system are marked by modulating modality .

This collection of motets for SA(T)B voices is the ideal supplement for advanced choral conducting and rehearsal methods courses. Each brief motet incorporates musical characteristics that require conductors to execute a variety of skills and techniques, including dynamic changes, cues and preparations, tempo changes, legato and staccato patterns, the use of the left hand, and more. These original motets feature fragments of standard Latin text with relatively simple but musically interesting construction, flexible tenor and bass voicing, and optional piano accompaniment—making them well suited for standalone performance in church and school settings as well. A brief note for conductors precedes each work, and the booklet concludes with a concise but masterful guide to score study as well as an evaluation rubric for student conductors. A beautiful and versatile collection of motets for any context! Richard Nance brings over forty-five years of teaching experience with public school, church, community, and collegiate choirs to the composition of this collection of motets. He has many years of experience teaching conducting and music methods courses at Pacific Lutheran University, and his choirs have regularly performed at conferences sponsored by ACDA, NAfME, and NCCO. He has also published several choral works and has a featured series with Walton Music.

Four Motets and a Chorale are choral interpolations drawn from Randall Giles' Latin setting of St. John's Passion. Movements I, II and V have organ accompaniment, primarily derived from the choral parts. Perhaps the best-known of these texts is Crux fidelis--Faithful Cross--which is set as a traditional four-part chorale. In the other four movements, Dr. Giles blends chromatic voice leading and varied meters (often within wide tessituras) to augment the naturally expressive sense of the texts.

The final part from 1791 took on a new direction, as was reflected in the formulation of the title: Four-part Latin and German choral settings for use by choirs in churches and schools. The first part, or the motet collection, part VI, from Johann Adam Hiller, Ducal Music Director of Kurland, Cantor of St. Thomas School and Music Director of both of the main churches in Leipzig. (additional parts were not published). The volume precedes a foreword, in which Hiller relates why he composed and published the present pieces. Of special interest is the great amount of information about church music and liturgical practice of this time, which he in part could shape, but in the face of whose traditions he also sometimes felt powerless. So this foreword belongs among the most important documents on the living practice of Protestant church music in the last years of the 18th century.

The music of Dering forms a lively commentary on the complex artistic interchange between England and the continent in the early seventeenth century, and the picture is extended with this collection of small-scale settings of Latin texts with continuo accompaniment. Performed both in the chapel of Queen Henrietta Maria and in the residential quarters of Oliver Cromwell, these pieces were clearly much in demand for intimate devotional observances. Motets from printed and manuscript sources are included, as well as incomplete works plausibly attributed to the composer.

Composed by Marcel Dupre, Laudate is the last of the Four Motets. Written for a mixed SATB and two organs, the lyrics are in Latin and the volume includes all the scores: female soprano and alto, male tenor and bass and the two organ scores. The piece is introduced by the two organs and the male voices are the first to start singing (tenor, followed quickly by the bass). The full SATB then sings together, sometimes alternated by the organs and the organ parts include an outstanding toccata. Laudate is an amazing way to finish this series with a triumphant and glorious celebration of God. The organ scores require some upper intermediate skills, with the knowledge of pedals and the vocal parts, quite demanding, evolve in polyphony and polyrhythm. Marcel Dupre is a French composer and virtuoso organist who won the Prix de Rome in 1914. He became famous when he played the works of Bach in its totality from memory in 1920. He later became the professor of many renowned students at the Paris Conservatoire such as Olivier Messiaen, Jean Langlais and Pierre Cochereau amongst others.

In his six-volume collection Motetten und Chorarien (1779) Johann Adam Hiller compiled the works of his fellow composers in six volumes and published them himself. The third volume of this collection contains compositions of the master motet composers, Homilius and Rolle, as well as works by Graun, Caldara, Fehre, Tag and Hiller. The motet by Caldara, a Latin composition for three lower voices and basso continuo, is in many respects out of place.

This 17-minute choral sequence is scored for mixed chorus and organ, with optional percussion, and presents five of the Latin motets’which occur at the end of movements in MacMillan's St John Passion (2007): Astiterunt reges terr, Judas, mercator pessimus, Peccantem me quotidie, Crucifixus etiam pro nobis, Stabat Mater. In the last of these, MacMillan quotes Bach's Passion Chorale; Bach's original is therefore included as an optional opening movement in the sequence, to be sung in German or English. The sequence was selected by Nigel Perrin (Bath Camerata), who comments, “I chose these movements because they stand on their own and are effective as 'motets' with organ accompaniment. The order of movements forms a sort of chronological sequence. Although the keys do not relate I felt that this did not matter as each movement is completely different, creating its own sound-world and emotion. I have not added to the original settings; rather, I have removed material so that the choral construction can stand alone.†A Choral Sequence from the St John Passion represents a significant addition to the repertory of devotional works for Passiontide and is appropriate for church and concert performance alike.
