Born in Toulouse Marcel Bitsch (1921-2011) went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming a professor of counterpoint at the institution. As an exceptionally versatile composer Bitsch has composed orchestral works chamber works and numerous pieces and studies for wind instruments. Concertino is a sublime addition to the Bassoon repertoire. Suited to advanced level bassoonists Bitsch's Concertino contains a range of exciting musical aspects including varied articulation complex rhythms irregular phrasing exploited tonality and much variation in dynamics tempo andperformance directions. For Bassoon-To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His 12 Caprices for Bassoon is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Compiled in 1968 Bozza's 12 Caprices addresses a variety of very difficult advanced features of the Bassoon includingcomplex rhythms articulation chromaticism variations in time signatures breath control phrasing intervals scales and arpeggios amongst other aspects. For all advanced Bassoon players Bozza's 12 Caprices are essential to continue to develop technique to a high standard.

Homage to Astor Piazzolla-'Chacontango is an original work my tribute to the great Argentinian tango composer Astor Piazzolla. It reflects his wonderful dance rhythms and harmonies combining these with aspects of an 18th-centuryChaconne - a theme and variations over a repeated descending bass line though this particular ‘chaconne’ is not in the traditional 3/4 time. This version of Chacontango - scored for five Bassoonsand Contrabassoon - offers the option of either the entire piece played as a solo (1st Bassoon) with the other players accompanying or as shared solos between those of the five Bassoonists who would like to play solos! If anyBassoonist does not wish to play a solo your solo part is cued into the 1st bassoon part and you can play the ‘tutti’ part at that point.  The original version (for solo with pre-recorded Bassoon ensemblebacking) was written in 2015 and was one of the items in my solo programme with video ‘Bassoon Voyager’. This toured extensively around the UK in the Autumn 2015 bassoon project including performances at the RoyalCollege of Music in London the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester Bristol University and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.' - Laurence Perkins

The introductory theme of the Variations op. 41 takes the form of a jazzed-up rendition of the opening solo bassoon motif from Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and the whole set of variations encompasses Kapustin's style in microcosm. Every conceivable mainstream jazz influence is to be found in this work evoking memories of Count Basie and Erroll Garner amongst others while all the time subjecting itself to traditional classical form. In particular the last four pages contain some of Kapustin's most exciting music.
