Veni was composed by Kay Johannsen in November 2015. Similar to his 2010 work Et vidimus gloriam eius for four choral groups (SSA, TTB, SATB, SATB) and organ based on the beginning of St John's Gospel, Veni requires a spatial separation of three four-part choirs. The starting point of the composition is the 12th century hymn Veni redemptor gentium by St Ambrose of Milan, which Martin Luther used as the basis of his 1524 hymn Nun komm, der Heiland. The four sections of the cantus firmus are sung in turn by all the basses, altos, sopranos, and tenors, each part at a louder dynamic than the other parts. For the accompanying voices Johannsen uses different principles of canonic technique and motivic variation, with most of the material derived from the cantus firmus. The organ part of this 12-part chorale arrangement provides a harmonic orientation, but is completely independent and introduces both moments of rhythmic accentuation and elements of veiling. The choral writing is also deepened and elevated by the organ sounds derived from the text. Despite all the motivic links between the parts, the music has a direct sensual effect as a sound collage. The work ends with three increasingly distant, homophonic invocations of Veni: the plea Komm occurs at the beginning as at the end.

MacMillan's first percussion concerto Veni, Veni, Emmanuel was premiered to immediate acclaim by Evelyn Glennie and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste, at the BBC Proms in 1992. It swiftly established itself in the repertory of frequently performed new works, achieving over 500 performances worldwide to date. The work is in one continuous movement and is based on the Advent plainsong of the title. On one level the piece is a purely abstract work in which all the musical material is drawn from the 15th-century French Advent plainchant; on another level it is a musical exploration of the theology behind the Adventmessage, but with a liturgical detour to the Easter Vigil at the very end.

Michael John Trotta interpreted the well-known Latin text, Veni, Veni Emmanuel as a dialogue between petitioners and the Creator, a combination of old and new. He masterfully juxtaposes a personal longing for something still to come with the steadfast assurance of the ever-present, yet unseen. While the original theme is associated with the Christmas season, the wider theme of longing for something greater is universal to the human condition and allows this piece to be programmed throughout the year for any concert, contest or festival. This piece is also available for SATB Voices (CM9418) and SSAA Voices (CM9436) and is a part of the MJT Signature Series.

Already one of the most popular choral settings in the Carl Fischer Music catalog, Michael John Trotta's setting of Veni, Veni Emmanuel has now been skillfully transcribed by James Meredith for band. Trotta's setting of this seminal carol juxtaposes the old and new together in a refreshingly different approach to the song. The piece can work with band alone or with the popular choral setting. It is sophisticated enough for high school groups to put together quickly and can also work well with middle school groups. This piece was conceived as a dialogue between the supplicants and the creator, a combination of old and new, juxtaposing a personal longing for something still to come, with the steadfast assurance of something ever-present yet not always seen. While the original theme is associated with the Christmas season, the wider theme of longing for something greater is universal to the human condition and allows this piece to be programmed throughout the year. This work may be performed with SATBÂ Voices (published by Carl Fischer Music, CM9418).
