Sonata in a minor for Violin and Basso continuo-There has been increased general interest in the Bohemian composer Johann Baptist Georg Neruda (c. 1711 1776) over the past few years especially due to his frequently played trumpet concerto. A respectedviolinist and longstanding member of the Dresden Court Orchestra he did however mainly compose for the Violin. The substantial and technically quite demanding Violin Sonata in a minor was published for the first timeever in 1982 as part of Henle's edition ?Bohemian Violin Sonatas? (HN 334). for Violin and Piano-Brahms had already announced his ?retirement? from composition when in the spring of 1894 he played chamber music with the cellist Robert Hausmann and the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. This encounter apparently renewed his enthusiasm for Mühlfeld?s much admired playing and inspired him to write two Clarinet sonatas in the summer of the same year.Brahms conceived an alternate version of the works for Viola from the beginning and already before the publication of these two versions he intended to do another one for Violin a version which was to require changes and was to result in an independent edition. While the Clarinet and Viola versions havedeveloped a rich performance tradition the Violin version is almost unknown. Yet for the Violin version the composer revised the original Clarinet part much more extensively than he did for the Viola version and also rewrote the Piano part to achieve a thoroughly convincing Violin and Piano idiom. Georg Friedrich Handel's Sonatas for Violin and Basso Continuo belong to the core repertoire of Baroque Violin music some of them even being among the most famous repertoire pieces of their time. Arcangelo Corelli (1653 - 1713) was an Italian violinist and composer. He was one of the earliest pioneers of the modern Violin and helped define its capabilities for generations after. He only published 6 opuses in his lifetime but they are arguably the most influential collection of baroque music that survives today. His Opus 5 was a collection of 12 Violin Sonatas the only Sonatas he published. They were written for the composer’s own use and performed by him many times showcasing the Violin technique he had developed over his career. Adagio and Allegro are the last two movements in Corelli’s Sonata No.1 in DMajor. Originally written for Violin and Harpsichord they are published here for Violin and Piano.

This complete edition of the Mozart sonatas for violin and keyboard has been researched and prepared by Cliff Eisen one of the most distinguished Mozart scholars of our time. Professor Eisen recognizes that many of the apparent inconsistencies and idiosynchrasies of Mozart's notation are perfectly deliberate and that the attempts in many other editions to impose uniformity upon similar phrases or musical paragraphs can bemisguided. As he writes in the preface '...the notion that the classical style represents a model of symmetry balance and clarity is for the most part an 19th-century fiction...it has little to do with Mozart's actual practice which is basedprimarily on variety of both content and articulation.' So in this new edition alternative readings found in parallel passages are preserved rather than being sterilized by a spurious quest for conformity. Naturally all such instances are noted within the Critical Commentary. The highly individual beaming within Mozart's autographs is also respected in the new edition as this often contributes to our aural perceptions of phrase structure and accent. Professor Eisenis is conscious that there is no single 'Urtext' for this music. On the contrary he believes that 'there is compelling evidence that Mozart's later performances of his works were characterized by changes--sometimes substantial changes--in the musical text.' Leopold Mozart was only able to understand his son?s musical genius in terms of it being a God-given wonder: ?That my boy [...] knows all of this with his 8 years that could be expected of a man of forty years. In short: whoeverhas not seen or heard it cannot believe it?. In 1764 Wolfgang composed six sonatas in London possibly after the model of Johann Christian Bach?s ?Opus 2? that can either be played as piano trios as violin sonatas or simplyon the piano. ?Royal? sources were consulted for the edition: the copy in the British Library bears the handwritten note: ?This Volume belongs to the Queen 1788?.With marked and unmarked string parts.

Of Grieg?s three Violin sonatas the great C-minor Sonata op. 45 is the best known today. And unjustly so because the two early sonatas are captivating in their joy to play and their fresh youthful tone. And what is more they can also be played by advanced students due to their somewhat lesser technical demands. Written in 1867 the G-major Violin Sonata op. 13 palpably draws on Grieg?s enthusiasm for Norwegian folk music; the lively outer movements in particular take as their model the traditional ?jumping dance.? Aside from the second print edition of 1887 revised by Grieg himself the autograph manuscript in Stockholm wasalso consulted for this edition thus offering an optimally ascertained musical text.
