Prokofiev did not compose his Visions fugitives â?? 20 â??fleeting visionsâ? â?? in one go, but in clusters between 1915 and 1917, immediately before the Russian Revolution that compelled him to leave his native country in 1918. We know from his diaries that at least some of them owe their existence to extra-musical impulses. Thus several pieces were inspired by people close to him. Others impart his emotional reaction to the political situation with its menacing brutality. According to his own statement, for example, no. 19 â??was inspired by the events of February 1917 in Petrogradâ?, during the Revolution's first phase. Technically the pieces are not too demanding, and are also often used in teaching. They now appear for the first time in an Urtext edition that considers all the musical sources created during the composer's lifetime. In his preface, Prokofiev specialist Simon Morrison provides biographical context for the genesis of this fantastic piano cycle.

The eight pieces in this volume have been selected from the set of twenty which Prokofieff completed in 1917 for piano solo. They are predominantly lyrical in character, and every one is an example of Prokofieff's great gift for creating simple but astonishingly fresh and characterful music.

Morgan Hayes is a noted young British composer of piano music, whose work has been programmed by leading contemporary pianists including Andrew Ball, Stephen Gutman, Rolf Hind, Sarah Nicolls and Ian Pace. For friends and fellow performers he often writes short, celebratory bagatelles entitled Strides, and three of them are collected here in the first book of an ongoing series. Fugitive visions that include 'Wisps of Melody', a bright fanfare and a disjointed march, they are within the range of younger pianists possessing a confident technique of around Grade 5 or above, and pianists of any age with an appetite for bold new repertoire.

1st complete perf: Catherine Gordeladze, The Gasteig, Munich (Winners & Masters Series), 21 April 2007 Ideal for confident young pianists keen to explore cutting-edge new music, the second book of Strides by Morgan Hayes adds five more distinctively original miniatures to the three 'fugitive visions' already published in Strides Book 1. Propulsive rhythm and melody mark out turbid expressive territory in the first two pieces, while the third Stride explores 'glacial' octaves, and the fourth and fifth add new fantasy to a Bach sarabande and a chaconne. Specific technical challenges in each piece test the reflex and stamina of players of Grade 6 standard and above, who will also enjoy the impressive virtuoso impact Strides deliver in performance.
