Pastoral music makers have talents that translate across denominations, and every now and then a musician might find him- or herself playing in unfamiliar territory (different order of service, different rituals, different traditions, different musical styles, etc.). The question of how to adapt to another pattern of worship may arise, creating a great deal of confusion or stress for the musician. A Primer for the Visiting Organist, edited by Fred Moleck, provides a comprehensive answer for anyone in this situation. This book includes insightful chapters by some of the foremost experts on music in worship that describe, in detail, what the visiting organist can expect when playing for one of the following eight religious traditions: African American Protestant: Dr. James Abbington Baptist: Dr. David Music Episcopalian: Dr. Carol Doran Reform Jewish: Mr. Scott Kumer Lutheran: Dr. Paul Westermeyer Presbyterian: Mr. David Eicher Roman Catholic: Mr. Robert Batastini & Dr. Fred Moleck United Methodist: Dr. Don Saliers A Primer for the Visiting Organist covers everything from the order of service to the question of receiving communion. There is a wealth of information here—no organist should travel without it.

Johann Sebastian Bach's chorale cantataNow my soul exalts the Lord(BWV 10) was composed in 1724 for the Feast of Visitation (2 July). Its themes are based on the Marian hymn of praise (Magnificat) from the Gospel according to Luke.Bach gave the free combination of poetic paraphrase and Biblical text a varied musical setting ranging from the mighty opening chorus via two large arias to an intimate duet and richly pictorial recitatives. Despite the small instrumental forces ofad libitumtrumpet, two oboes, strings and basso continuo, Bach creates a majestic musical language appropriate to the Magnificat. This Urtext performing edition is based on theNew Bach Edition.* Bach cantata with a small instrumental ensemble* Based on the Urtext of theNew Bach Edition* Performance duration of 20-25 minutes

Arr. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). This charming, canzonet-style motet was arranged by the young Brahms for his Hamburg women's choir in the late 1850's. The strophic text is based on the account in Luke 1 of Mary's visitation to Elizabeth. Both text and music convey the cousins' joy at seeing one another; the refrain paraphrases the Magnificat. This piece was a favorite of the Hamberg women's choir, performed many times as its members, also, gathered to sing joyfully. Liturgical use: Advent; Feast of the Visitation, May 31. SSAA (much Alto I divisi) a cappella. German/English. 8 pages, plus singing and literal transations and editorial notes. duration: 2:30 min.; range: f to a; difficulty: easy-medium. Gloriæ Dei Cantores Men's Schola sings these Gregorian chants of love and devotion to Mary, the Mother of God, the Theotokos, the Star of the Sea. While our names for her are as varied as the traditions that surround her being, one thing remains constant: she invariably points us to her own Son, teaching us to greet Him with that same yes by which she opened herself to Him, body, soul and spirit. May we all receive the blessing of her example, told through these ancient songs of faith. This SACD features the Stabat Mater, the Marian antiphons for Compline, and selected propers from the Feasts of the Immaculate Conception, the Nativity of Mary, the Annunciation, the Visitation, and the Assumption.

This canticle is appointed as the response to the fifth reading of the Easter Vigil, for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart (year B), and is optional for the Baptism of the Lord (year B). It could also be used as a song during the sprinkling rite throughout the Easter Season. The setting requires a strong cantor to clearly proclaim the calls and elicit a strong congregation response. Because the cantor always sings the call, various language configurations are possible.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat BWV 243 was composed in its first form in E flat, right at the beginning of Bach’s period in Leipzig, possibly for the Visitation of Mary on July 2, 1723. Its performance on Christmas Day 1723 is well documented. Following a Leipzig tradition, Bach wrote four extra Christmas movements for this occasion.Only in the 1730s did Bach arrange the Magnificat into the well-known version in D; the orchestration was slightly altered, particularly improving the considerable practical performance problems encountered in the E flat major version. Our critical Carus edition by Bach expert Dr. Ulrich Leisinger contains the version of the Magnificat in D, based on Bach’s autograph score. For Christmas performances the extra movements are available separately (Carus 31.243/50). Score available separately - see item CA.3124300.
