The source of the present edition of the Oboe Concerto in A minor by Antonio Vivaldi is the Collected Works of Vivaldi, edited by Malipiero, published by Ricordi 1955. The title of the original score is Concerto in La minore per oboe, archi e cembalo the original setting: Oboe, Violini I-II, Viole, Violoncelli, Contrabassi and Cembalo. The arrangement for oboe and piano is kept in accurate conformity with the musical text of score, the continuo part - however - has been more freely adapted (of course within the possibilities of baroque style). The piano part contains the entire orchestral material in the Tutti-s, thus the soloist is not obliged to play all the Tutti parts. However, in Movement I and III the first and last Tutti may never be omitted by the performer.

In recent years significant numbers of manuscripts of instrumental pieces by Antonio Vivaldi have been discovered in libraries in Austria (Vienna), Norway (Trondheim}, Poland (Danzig), and especially Sweden (Uppsala, Stockholm, Skara, Lund). Included among these manuscripts are a few pieces for woodwind instruments at least as attractive as those known from the Vivaldi manuscripts in Dresden and Turin. Three of them, a flute sonata in E minor, a trio sonata for 2 oboes and basso continuo, and the present concerto for oboe, violin and orchestra in C minor will be published by Musica Rara under my editorship. David Lasocki, Iowa City, Iowa, U.S.A., December 1971.

Giuseppe Valentini (1681–1753) was one of the few Italian composers contemporary with Vivaldi who wrote concertos featuring wind instruments. Two oboe concertos by him have been known for a long time. In 2022 Michael Talbot discovered a hitherto unknown third concerto, in G minor. It is preserved anonymously in a Swedish collection, but Valentini’s authorship is evident from the fact that all its movements are skilful adaptations, clearly made by the composer himself, of individual movements from two of his string concertos published in Op. 7 (1710). The concerto is typically Roman in scoring, lacking a viola part, and is equally suitable for performance in ‘chamber’ fashion, with one instrument to a part, or in ‘orchestral, fashion, with doubled string parts. It is highly characterful, with moments of great expressive power, and of only moderate difficulty for the soloist.

This fine concerto shares its motto with Tomaso Albinoni's oboe concerto in G minor Op. 9 No. 8, published in 1722, and with Antonio Vivaldi's violin concerto in G minor, RV 317, published in 1729 as Op. 12 No. 1. It is very likely that Zani deliberately borrowed the beautiful motto as a homage to the famous masters; and the same motive recurs in the third movement in a subtle variant.
