Late in his life, composer J. Rosamond Johnson (Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing) submitted to his longtime publisher, E.B. Marks, a list of songs that would comprise a volume of his best early popular songs written with his pre-1910 partner Bob Cole and his brother, James Weldon Johnson (Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man). That list was never put into print...until now. Featuring an introductionby Dr. Thomas Riis (Just Before Jazz) and several rare photos, this new compilation is the latest legacy offering from the Marks archive, which contains a rich heritage of turn-of-the-century African-American, and thus distinctly American, pre-jazz-era popular song. Includes: Ain't Dat Scan'lous * Big Indian Chief * The Big Red Shawl * The Bleeding Moon * Congo Love Song * The Countess of Alagazam * Fishing * I Don't Want to Be No Actor Man No Mo' * I'll Always Love Old Dixie * I'll Keep a Warm Spot in My Heart for You * I've Got Troubles of My Own * The Katy-Did, the Cricket and the Frog * Lazy Moon * Lit'l Gal * Louisiana Lize * Lovely Daughter of Allah * Ma Mississippi Belle * The Maiden with the Dreamy Eyes * Mudder Knows * My Heart's Desiah is Miss Mariah * My Castle on the Nile * Nobody's Lookin' but de Owl an' de Moon * Oh, Didn't He Ramble * The Old Flag Never Touched the Ground * On the Road to Monterey * The Pathway of Love * Roll Them Cotton Bales * Save It for Me! * The Spirit of the Banjo! * Sugar Babe * Two Eyes * Under the Bamboo Tree * When de Jack O'Lantern Starts to Walk About * When It's All Goin' Out, and Nothin' Comin' In * Who Do You Love?

The volume you are holding is a vivid testimony …to the value of examining this variety and dynamism from multiple, overlapping points of view …to the value of both realist and idealist voices …to the value of articulating wisdom. From the foreword by John D. Witvliet, Calvin Institute of Christian Worship Since the publication of the first volume of Readings in African American Church Music and Worship, public and academic interest in the music and worship in black churches has significantly increased. This second volume makes available the most recent scholarship on twenty-first-century developments and trends, through a representative number of articles, essays, and chapters written by brilliant musicians, authors, and theologians of our time. The list of contributors includes some of the finest emerging scholars, whose voices we will be hearing for years to come, as well as offerings from seasoned authors, whose research and writings are well regarded by peers and the worshiping community at large. The significant contributions—from names new and familiar—greatly broaden the field of study. The 43 chapters of this volume are divided into 7 categories: Worship and Liturgical Practices Perspectives on Praise and Worship Liturgical Theologies Hip Hop and/in the Church Proclamation of the Word Perspectives on Women and Gender Hymnody: Sound and Sense Insightful, thought-provoking, challenging, hopeful—this volume will be a source of knowledge, a stimulus for discussion, and a call to (re)consider the many and varied viewpoints of the African American church. The symposium brought together 110 participants from 23 nations and six continents to learn of each other’s work, establish collaborations and professional networks, and shape new directions for research in this important area of music education in Birmingham, England, from April 18-21, 2017. The two keynote addresses and 35 papers published in this volume document music assessment practice and the measurement and evaluation of music learning across the world in local, state, and national contexts at all levels. The attendees also attended special work sessions to discuss the International Principles for Assessment in Music Education (developed and introduced by the co-chairs at this symposium), and their discussions are summarized in this collection. As music educators across the world come to terms with increased expectations for accountability of learning in music, the scholars and practitioners who have contributed to this volume provide insight to guide their work. Timothy S. Brophy is Professor of Music Education and Director of Institutional Assessment at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Martin Fautley is Professor of Education and Director of Research in Education at Birmingham City University in Birmingham, England.
