. . . for Choirs Collections-Spirituals For Choirs is an exciting collection of 20 specially commissioned arrangements for a cappella and accompanied SATB choir. The contents reflect the richness and diversity of the spiritual tradition including many much-loved favorites alongside exquisite discoveries that are less well known. Each piece is bursting with freshness and invention to provide singers with inspirational moving and above all enjoyable repertoire. With a mixture of large and small-scale pieces there???s something here for every choir whatever its forces or levels of expertise.

The Manchester Carols is an inspired collaboration between composer Sasha Johnson Manning and Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. A collection of 12 carols linked with a gentle entertaining narration which reshape and modernise the Christmas story. Its creators wanted to write something that is relevant to and reflects modern society and which acknowledges the fact that even though someone might not subscribe to the religion behind the Nativity story they can still appreciate it as an inspiring magical tale. The carols are for everyone believers or not. Duffy uses the Christmas story as a metaphor for human experience giving usup-close and personal insights into the central characters of the nativity – Mary Joseph a newborn baby and a ‘golden youth’ (aka the Angel Gabriel). As Duffy herself says: 'I think the story is wonderful. There’s a lot we can take from it on a human level even if we don’t take the divine element.' There are hints too of the darker grittier side of the Nativity story – refugees poverty giving birth on the road; and looking further forward there are hints of Jesus’ fate on the cross. These carols were written in Manchester in 2007 and first performed by children from several Manchester schools at The Royal Northern College of Music (and again in 2008). All of us who worked on them – librettist composer artist conductor teachers musicians and singers – live and work in that great city. And so these are and will forever be  The Manchester Carols'.

For the more advanced treble choirs here is a welcome arrangement of a well-known spiritual. Originating in a funky bass line the bluesy arrangement is developed using the different placements of the voice for coloring. A great piano accompaniment helps the singers to find their “groove.” A great selection for festival programming!

What an uplifting medley of hope! Patti Drennan weaves three time-honored classics to produce an inspiring anthem you won't want to miss! “Down at the Cross ” “Beneath the Cross of Jesus ” and“Hallelujah for the Cross” form a tremendous trio of triumphant resurrection songs that are sure to bring back memories while celebrating the joy of Easter. Accessible voice parts and a “brass fanfare”piano accompaniment are sure to make Hallelujah for the Cross a choir favorite!

There is a wealth of Christmas repertoire for choirs to choose from and sometimes it is difficult to select which arrangement you want of your traditional carols. It is refreshing when you get a selection which has a new version of a familiar carol plus two carols which you think you should know but donâ??t. This is the case with Joanna Gillâ??s three new carols. â??Sir Christèmasâ? a traditional British carol in the setting by William Mathias has been a popular choice for many years. Yet here is a refreshing new arrangement with the hint of sleigh bells and a choral texture where the melody is passed from voice to voice. The carol builds to a triumphant ending to highlight the fun and merry making to be had at Christmas. Then we have two new original carol settings: â??I heard the bells on Christmas dayâ? with words by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It is presented with a swinging bell like texture and a catchy tune builds to a dramatic ending wishing peace on earth goodwill to men. â??Look to the Stableâ? is a new carol with words by Becca Beschizza a gentle lullaby to the new born baby Jesus praising this event and the Glory of God. This gentle melody is bound to become a favourite with both choirs and audiences.The three carols in this album are going to appeal to the singer with their simple but effective word setting along with the beautiful and well-crafted accompaniments. Furthermore they are going to appeal to the audience and will become a popular feature in many Christmas carol services around the world.

This solid and stately setting has instructions for tracking through both the LSB (7 verses) and ELW (5 verses) version of this hymn but is useful for any congregation wanting a festive Easter setting. An extended organ/brassintroduction version based on Bach's setting of 'Christ Lag in Todesbaden' from the Orgelbuchlein is also available.
