Wortlich ubersetzt ist das Libretto ein 'kleines Buch', ein 'Buchlein'. Doch nicht irgendein Buchlein. Seit es Opern gibt, gibt es die Textbucher dazu. Oft erzahlen die Universalsprache Musik und der Ausdruck der Darsteller die Geschichte, auch wenn man die Worte nicht versteht. Trotzdem ist ein Libretto sehr hilfreich fur das Verstandnis der Details. Gerade dann, und das fast immer, wenn die Oper in der Originalsprache aufgefuhrt wird. In den Libretti ist in der Regel das Original der Ubersetzung gegenubergestellt. Sie konnen so problemlos parallel Handlung und Inhalt folgen. In den meisten Fallen existiert das Textbuch Oper bevor die Musik dazu komponiert wird. Spannende und dramatische Geschichten bilden die Grundlage fur faszinierende Opernkompositionen.

In diesem Stuck stehen keine Spielangaben, es ist dem Interpreten zur freien Gestaltung uberlassen. Und auch hier gibt es wieder zwei grundsatzlich verschiedene Interpretationsmoglichkeiten. Man kann es eher klassisch oder eher jazzmassig spielen. Dieser Streifzug durch die harmonische Welt des 20. Jahrhunderts lasst beides zu, wobei es neben der rhythmischen Auffassung noch einen weiteren, nicht unwesentlichen Unterschied gibt. Wahrend man in der Klassik bei Akkorden in der rechten Hand tendenziell die oberste Note leicht heraushebt, wird das im Jazz nicht so gemacht. Alle Tone sind gleich anzuschlagen, denn nur dann kann sich der Klang eines Akkordes vollstandig entfalten. Und Klassiker werden dieses Stuck wahrscheinlich schneller und damit virtuoser als ,,Jazzmusiker spielen, wobei naturlich manche Stellen dazu geradezu verleiten sollen. Etwas anders verhalt es sich bei den wiederkehrenden Sechzehntelketten. Wenn man diese Passagen sehr genau phrasiert, dann sollte man sie nicht zu schnell nehmen. Aber in Wahrheit habe Sie jede Freiheit, und deswegen sollte sie sich auch nehmen. Doch hier noch ein kleiner Tipp: es gibt ein paar Stellen (eine verrate ich Ihnen hier: Takt 222), wo ein Subitopiano Wunder wirkt, gerade dann, wenn man es am wenigsten erwartet. Das Stuck ist ubrigens Paul Gulda gewidmet, mit dem mich eine langer dauernde musikalische Freundschaft verbindet, und der mehrere Stucke von mir uraufgefuhrt hat. (M. Ruegg).

Oder zu verschutten droht, in den Griff zu nehmen.Helmut Lachenmann (Skizze)Mitten in meiner Oper Das Madchen mit den Schwefelholzern - nach Hans Christian Andersen -, die im winterlichen eiskalten Kopenhagen spielt, gibt es einen Sprung in die mediterrane Vulkanlandschaft Suditaliens, wo - nach einem Text von Leonardo Da Vinci - ,,die Schwefelfeuer den grossen Berg offnen, um Steine und Erde samt den heraustretenden und herausgespieenen Flammen durch die Luft zu schleudern, und im Ausbruch ,,jedes Hindernis verjagen, das sich ihrem ungestumen Wuten entgegenstellt. Leonardo sieht in diesem Naturvorgang eine Metapher fur die Unruhe des menschlichen Herzens bei der Suche nach Erkenntnis. Er beschreibt eine Wanderung durch die schattigen Klippen hindurch bis vor den Eingang einer grossen Hohle, vor welcher der Erzahlende ,,im Gefuhl der Unwissenheit eine Zeitlang verharrt: ,,Ich hockte mit gekrummtem Rucken, die mude Hand aufs Knie gestutzt, beschattete ich mit der Rechten die gesenkten und geschlossenen Wimpern: - und n u n -, da ich mich mehrmals hin und her beugte, um in die Hohle hineinzublicken, verbot mir das die grosse Dunkelheit, die darin herrschte. Als ich aber eine Zeitlang verharrt hatte, erwachten in mir zwei Gefuhle: Furcht und Verlangen - Furcht vor der drohenden Dunkelheit der Hohle, Verlangen aber, mit eigenen Augen zu sehen, was an Wunderbarem darin sein mochte. Diesem ,,n u n ist meine Komposition gewidmet: Sie - ahnlich wie auf andere Weise mein Klavierkonzert Ausklang - ist sozusagen ,,meine Alpensymphonie. Meine Musik, sozusagen als brodelnder Krater beginnend, verwandelt sich in eine Sequenz von Rufen, deren Widerhall die ,,drohende Finsternis zu durchdringen und auszuloten versucht, und sie mundet - auf dem Umweg uber eine Art ,,Tanz auf dem Vulkan der beiden Solo-Instrumente - in eine instrumental paraphrasierte Sprech-Landschaft, als ob das Zischen und Fauchen, nichts weiter wiedergabe als die erweiterten Konsonanten eines gesprochenen imaginaren Textes. Dieser schliesslich - als Botschaft des im Ungeborgenen nach Erkenntnis Suchenden - konkretisiert sich zu jenem abgrundigen Satz des japanischen Philosophen und Grunders der ,,Kyoto-Schule, Kitaro Nishida: ,,Das Ich ist kein Ding, sondern ein Ort. Die Beziehung meines Werks zur Strauss'schen Alpensymphonie - der Komponist wollte sie ursprunglich nennen ,,der Antichrist - ist in ihrer antipodischen Gegensatzlichkeit evident. Es ist eine machtvolle, letztlich aber gutige, dem Menschen zugewandte, idyllische Natur, die bei Strauss beschworen wird, und den nachtlich in die hausliche Behaglichkeit Heimkehrenden erfullt Ehrfurcht und Dankbarkeit: es ist ein ,,glaubiger Antichrist, und die Pastorale Beethovens lasst grussen. Wie alles von Strauss war es ein - s e i n - letzter (oder vorletzter ...) Blick auf ein zerfallendes Paradies (1915 geschrieben ...). Heute ist vielleicht jedes Werk, welches sich den innovativen Anspruch von musikalischer Tradition zu Eigen gemacht hat und im 21. Alma Mahler (1879-1964) ist ohne Zweifel eine der schillerndsten Personlichkeiten ihrer Zeit, die bis heute nichts an ihrer Faszination verloren hat. ,,Sie gehort zu den ganz wenigen Zauberfrauen, die es gibt, sagte der Schriftsteller Franz Werfel, ihr dritter Ehemann nach Gustav Mahler und Walter Gropius. Manner scheinen ihr Lebensinhalt gewesen zu sein: geniale Manner - mit und ohne Trauschein. Sie selbst liess gern durchblicken, wie lang ihre private Eroberungsliste war ... Alma ist und bleibt ein Unikum der Kulturgeschichte, doch aufgrund ihres Rufes als ,,Femme fatale und ihres extravaganten Wesens wird leider allzu oft ausser Acht gelassen, dass sie selbst wunderbare Kompositionen hervorgebracht hat, sehr gebildet war und die Gabe besass, nicht nur Manner zu verzaubern. In einer Zeit, wo Frauen noch keineswegs gleichberechtigt waren, lebte Alma nach dem Motto: ,,Jeder Mensch kann alles - aber er muss auch zu allem bereit sein. Bei der Komposition der Alma Phantasien habe ich mich von der bemerkenswerten Alma inspirieren lassen, mein Ohr in deren Zeit versetzt und das Gehorte in ihre eigene Tonsprache ubersetzt. Dabei habe ich in meine Kompositionen zwei kurze musikalische Zitate aus Alma Mahlers Werken eingeflochten, namlich aus Die stille Stadt und Ich wandle unter Blumen . Der Text stammt aus Alma Mahlers Tagebucheintragungen und handelt von zwei Mannern, die Alma Mahlers Leben pragten: Alexander Zemlinsky und Gustav Mahler. Als ich die Anleitung zu Cages ,,Variations II gelesen hatte, war mir klar, dass ich keine Version machen wurde - ich war eigentlich ziemlich uberrascht und entsetzt uber die Zeitgebundenheit der Vorlage. Diese Art der Parameterskalierung steht ganz im Bann seriellen Denkens, und eine Ausarbeitung ware langweilig, sogar eine Zwangsjacke fur mich gewesen. Es sieht nur so aus, als ware mit diesem Programm alles moglich. Die Vorlage bietet die grosste Freiheit eher zur grossten Striktheit, ahnlich einer Gummizelle, die zwar nachgibt, einen aber dennoch gefangen halt.Bei meinem Komponieren geht von den Tonen etwas aus, sie konnen nicht nur fur sich selbst sein, mit isoliert gedachten Tonen kann ich nicht umgehen. Mich interessiert mehr der Ubergang von einem Ton zum anderen, und dabei spielt das Erleben und Reagieren eine Rolle. Cages Stuck dagegen ist viel zu isolationstransparent, es tragt nicht die Meinung oder den Gedankengang des Autors, es tragt nur dessen Fragen, die aber nicht meine Fragen sind.Dennoch fand ich es einmal interessant, mich mit dem Projekt zu beschaftigen und meine Musik solch einem Denken zu offnen. Ich habe daher einen Wurf gemacht, ihn ausgemessen und die Masse dann ubertragen. Allerdings haben sie uberhaupt nichts mit den Parametern von Cage zu tun. Ich habe alle Zahlen benutzt, aber meine Komponierweise beibehalten.,,Mit etwas Extremismus ist ein Zitat aus der Rede von Cage an ein Orchester, wo er sagte: ,,Wenn Sie Klange zu machen haben, spielen Sie sie mit etwas Extremismus, als ob ... Sie einen solchen Klang noch nie angetroffen hatten. Auch die Tone hier sollen mit so einem Ausdruck gespielt werden.Es sind verschiedene Welten in dem Stuck, die in gewissem, sich kommentierendem Widerspruch zueinander stehen, zum Beispiel tritt ein ekstatischer Rhythmus aus Skrjabins 5. Sonate auf, der hier von einem Becken gespielt wird und in die Ausrufe ,,Mit Ekstase, mit Gefuhl, mit Ausdruck mundet. Oder ,,das Ruhe ausstrahlende Beruhren von Naturmaterialien. Oder die Rasseln und Ketten, die gleichsam als Klangstriche uber den Buhnenboden gezogen und schliesslich aufgehangt werden - das waren die Linien von den Folien, die mich sehr gestort haben und die ich so aus der Welt geschafft habe. Dann gibt es funf Schubladen, in denen Cassettenrecorder mit Aufnahmen meiner eigenen Musik sind. Die werden zu bestimmten Zeitpunkten angeschaltet, die Schubladen verschieden weit geoffnet, wieder geschlossen und schliesslich die Musik ausgeblendet.Am Schluss habe ich ein kleines Bombchen in das Cage-Projekt gelegt, namlich ein Paukensolo mit einem grossen, expressiven Crescendo. Anschliessend gibt es eine Muskel-Coda mit einem Korpertremolo, einem Zittern aufgrund von Anstrengung. Die Spieler sollen im Ekstaserhythmus von Skrjabin ausgesuchte Muskelposen machen. Das muss etwas mit Gefuhl, Ausdruck, Ekstase zu tun haben. Muskeln in Ol, schone Korper, so etwas musste es sein. Bis zum Schluss ist die Muskelstellung zu halten, mit ganz aufgeblasenem Brustkorb, dann ausatmen, und schon ist der Muskelprotz wie eine leere Tute. Ich fand es notig, so etwas in das Cage-Projekt einzufugen. Ich glaube, mein Stuck spiegelt Cage-Verehrung wider, aber von jemandem, der sich doch nur beschrankt auf Cage einlassen kann. (Nicolaus A. Einleitendes: Zu Ende des Jahres 1833 fand sich in Leipzig, allabendlich und wie zufallig, eine Anzahl meist jungerer Musiker zusammen, zunachst zu geselliger Versammlung, nicht minder aber auch zum Austausch der Gedanken uber die Kunst, die ihnen Speise und Trank des Lebens war, - die Musik.Man kann nicht sagen, dass die damaligen musikalischen Zustande Deutschlands sehr erfreulich waren. Auf der Buhne herrschte noch Rossini, auf den Clavieren fast ausschliesslich Herz und Hunten. Und doch waren nur erst wenige Jahre verflossen, dass Beethoven, C. M. v. Weber und Franz Schubert unter uns lebten. Zwar Mendelssohns Stern war im Aufsteigen und verlauteten von einem Polen Chopin wunderbare Dinge, - aber eine nachhaltigere Wirkung ausserten diese erst spater. Da fuhr denn eines Tages der Gedanke durch die jungen Brausekopfe: lasst uns nicht mussig zusehen, greift an, dass es besser werde, greift an, dass die Poesie der Kunst wieder zu Ehren komme.So entstanden die ersten Blatter einer neuen Zeitschrift fur Musik. Aber nicht lange wahrte die Freude steten Zusammenhaltens diese Vereins junger Krafte. Der Tod forderte ein Opfer in einem der theuersten Genossen, Ludwig Schunke. Von den anderen trennten sich einige zeitweise ganz von Leipzig. Das Untenehmen stand auf dem Punct, sich aufzulosen.Da entschloss sich Einer von ihnen, gerade der muikalische Phantast der Gesellschaft, der sein bisheriges Leben mehr am Clavier vertraumt hatte, als unter Buchern, die Leitung der Redaction in die Hand zu nehmen und fuhrte sie gegen zehn Jahre lang bis zum Jahre 1844. So entstanden eine Reihe Aufsatze, aus denen diese Sammlung eine Auswahl gibt. Die meisten der darin ausgesprochenen Ansichten sind noch heute die seinigen. Was er hoffend und furchtend uber manche Kunsterscheinung geaussert, hat sich im Laufe der Zeit bewahrheitet.Und hier sei noch eines Bundes erwahnt, der ein mehr als geheimer war, namlich nur in dem Kopf seines Stifters existierte, der Davidsbundler. Es schien, verschiedene Ansichten der Kunstanschauung zur Aussprache zu bringen, nicht unpassend, gegensatzliche Kunstlercharaktere zu erfinden, von denen Florestan und Eusebius die bedeutendsten waren, zwischen denen vermittelnd Meister Raro stand. Diese Davidsbundlerschaft zog sich, wie ein rother Faden, durch die Zeitschrift, ,,Wahrheit und Dichtung in humoristischer Weise verbindend. Spater verschwanden die von den damaligen Lesern nicht ungern gesehenen Gesellen ganz aus der Zeitung, und von der Zeit an, wo sie eine ,,Peri in entlegene Zonen entfuhrte, hat man von schriftstellerischen Arbeiten von ihnen nichts wieder vernommen.Mochten denn diese gesammelten Blatter, wie sie eine reichbewegte Zeit wiederspiegeln, auch dazu beitragen, die Blicke der Mitlebenden auf manche von der Fluth der Gegenwart beinahe schon uberstromte Kunsterscheinung zu lenken, so ware der Zweck der Herausgabe erfullt.Wenn ubrigens in der Reihenfolge der Aufsatze die chronologische Ordnung aufrecht erhalten ist, so wird gerade dies ein Bild des wachsenden, sich immer mehr steigernden und klarenden Musiklebens jener Jahre vor die Augen fuhren.

Es war 1996, als mir Christoph Poppen, der damalige Leiter des Munchener Kammerorchesters, von einem kuriosen Konzert in Munsing (Ammerland) erzahlte: wahrend eines seiner Konzerte mit dem Orchester in der dortigen Kirche gab es, fur alle hor- und sichtbar, eines der grossten Unwetter, das die Region je gesehen hatte. Dabei schlug der Blitz ein in eine Art Wahrzeichen des Ortes, eine mehrere Jahrhunderte alte Linde. Unter den Zuhorern damals: die dort lebende Dichterin und Schriftstellerin Diana Kempff. Sie war unmittelbar erschuttert vom Tod der Linde und schrieb unter diesem Eindruck einige Gedichte. Christoph Poppen wiederum war - wie in vielen anderen Zusammenhangen auch - genialer Vermittler und stellte alsbald den Kontakt zu mir her. Die Idee: am Ort des Geschehens, in der Munsinger Kirche, solle ein Jahr spater die Urauffuhrung einer Art Requiem fur diesen Baum, der so vieles 'gesehen' hatte, erklingen. Im Rahmen der Holzhauser Musiktagen mit den Texten von Diana Kempff und meiner (noch zu schreibenden) Musik.Es gab bald eine wunderbare, sehr intensive Begegnung von Diana Kempff und mir, bei der sie etwas fur Schriftsteller nicht gerade Typisches tat: sie stellte mir frei, aus den vorliegenden Gedichten nach Belieben lediglich Teile, sogar nur Zeilenfragmente zu verwenden und auch die Reihenfolge nach meinen Bedurfnissen anzuordnen und zu gestalten. Sie begriff sofort (und wunschte!), dass durch die Musik ohnehin etwas Drittes, etwas ganz Anderes entstehen wurde. Die Tatsache, dass wir Monate spater eine sichtlich bewegte Diana Kempff auf die Buhne holen durfte, freute uns alle besonders. Ihre Lyrik ist Ausdruck einer offenkundig zutiefst gequalten Seele und kommt uns oft wunderlich-versponnen entgegen. Einer zerbrechlichen Zartheit steht eine bisweilen fast brutale Harte unversohnlich gegenuber. Das Schubert'sche 'Fremd bin ich eingezogen' gilt fur sie in besonderer Weise und aussert sich in ihren Versen in einer Nahe zu allem Fremden (trotz des gleichzeitigen manischen Umkreisens des Eigenen und der eigenen Erinnerung), Abseitigen und auch (bei aller gleichzeitigen Skepsis) Ubernaturlichen. Dieses geisterhaft-spukige Element versuchte ich durch meine Textauswahl und mit musikalischen Mitteln in diesen nun 'Sieben Abgesangen' zu verdeutlichen. Das erste Stuck ist eine karge Studie uber das Verrinnen der Zeit, das Nichts; das Zweite beschwort den Regen (den heilbringenden) herbei, der dann spater - wenngleich mit entsetzlicher Wirkung - auch kommt. Den dritten Abgesang habe ich 'Tanz der toten Seelen' betitelt; es ist ein Zwiefacher, der jedoch durch seine duster-halbseidene 'Wiener' Chromatik alles Liebenswurdig-Oberbayerische langst verloren hat. Das klanglich vielleicht avancierteste und dichteste Stuck ist der vierte Abgesang, der ganz aus der Perspektive der Linde selbst erzahlt wird. Der funfte Abgesang zu den Worten 'Und wenn der Tod so kommen mag' ist im Stile einer traurigen Volksweise bewusst schlicht gehalten. Wahrend der sechste Satz in seinem expressionistischen Gestus nicht ungefahrlich das Monodram streift, ist es schliesslich die Seele (die ausgehauchte, die weiterexistierende?), die wortlich den letzten Abgesang uber die Baume und die Seelen pragt. Diana Kempffs Gedichte, der Enthusiasmus Christoph Poppens, die phantastischen Urauffuhrungs-Interpreten, allen voran die Sangerin Juliane Banse, haben mich zur Komposition dieser 'Sieben Abgesange auf eine tote Linde' angeregt.Die 'Sieben Abgesange' sind nunmehr auch eine Erinnerung an die erst jungst verstorbene Diana Kempff. The Latin title Ad Fontis means ?to the source?. This lively march in 2/4time follows traditional forms of march composition with a cheerfulopening followed by a somewhat more lyrical trio. This ceremonialgenre of old is often used in the army to keep up the morale of thetroops, however a march can also serve perfectly well to add luster toany concert and bring immense pleasure to the audience. Ad Fontis is een vrolijke mars in tweekwartsmaat, geschreven door Harm Evers. De Latijnse titel van het werk betekent: naar de bron. Deze mars heeft dan ook geen ingewikkelde vorm, maar bestaat uit een opgewekt eerste gedeelteen een wat lyrischer trio - in de traditie van de marsmuziek. Dit ceremoniële genre wordt van oudsher in het leger gebruikt om het moreel van de manschappen hoog te houden. Een mars kan echter ook uitstekend dienen ter opluisteringvan elk concert - vaak tot groot genoegen van het publiek.Ad Fontis ist ein lebhafter Marsch im Zweivierteltakt. Unter dem Titel Zur Quelle“ folgt Harm Evers der ursprünglichen, traditionellen Marschform, die sich aus einem lebhaften ersten Teil und einem lyrischen Trio zusammensetzt. Dieses zeremonielle Genre wird von Alters her in der Armee eingesetzt, eignet sich jedoch auch wunderbar dazu, einem Konzert mehr Glanz zu verleihen - nicht zuletzt zum Vergnügen des Publikums. Ad Fontis (“ la sourceâ€) est une marche pétillante en 2/4 signée Harm Evers. Cette marche s’appuie sur une structure simple : une première partie pleine de vivacité et un trio lyrique qui s’inscrit dans les traditions des grandes marches. Ce genre musical cérémonieux fut prisé par l’armée pour maintenir le moral des troupes. Aujourd’hui, la marche apporte une touche de brillance tout programme de concert - pour le plus grand plaisir du public.
