Sing Pop A Cappella is a collection of a cappella arrangements of fantastic pop songs old and new, by renowned teacher, singer and director Gitika Partington. Her arrangements are used by choirs across the UK, and she emphasises that being able to read music is not necessary. Pour Choeur D'Hommes A Cappella-Scored for a cappella men’s choir (TTBB) Poulenc’s Quatre Petites Prieres de St Francois d’Assise were composed for and dedicated to the monastery choir at Champfleury (and in particular a certain monk there named Frere Jerome who happened to be the composer’s great-nephew).With the use of archaic textures of plainchant and Poulenc’s own harmonic colourings these four pieces create a unique reverence and solemnity.

In this piece for unaccompanied SATB choir fervent dance-like music appears side by side with fear and awe producing a dramatic contrast.The work was commissioned jointly by the Dean and Chapter of Winchester Cathedral andby Mrs Ruth Daniel on behalf of St. John's College Cambridge for performances during Advent 1997. There were simultaneous first performances on 29th November 1997 given by the Choir of Winchester Cathedral conducted by DavidHill and the choir of St. John's College conducted by Christopher Robinson in Cambridge.

This is a song composed for one of the girls' barracks in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp during the Holocaust. It's intent was two-fold: first when the girls were being moved about ina group outside the barrack it was sung on lai lai lai to keep the girls together and to identify them as belonging to a certain barrack: second the text consisted of virulently anti-Nazi lyrics that could be sung in the barrack to keep Hope alive when the girls were alone.

Conducteur et parties Saxophone Quartet (SATB) The Three Songs (Trois Chansons) dating from 1914/15 were arranged for four a cappella voices by Ravel immediately after he had written the music of these pieces. The lyrics were penned by the composer himself. The songs represent Ravel’s sole contribution to choral literature. The first song consists of three sections and tells the story of Nicolette, who sets out to pick flowers in the fields. Just like Little Red Ridinghood, she meets a wolf who asks her if she is on her way to her grandmother’s house (M.1-13). Fleeing from him, she meets a page who wonderswhether she would like to have him as her “lover true”. She dismisses his proposition though she finds it hard to do so (M. 14-39). In the third section, she encounters a plump, unhandsome man (lento!). He speaks to her:”Stay, stay, my Nicolette, all this gold I give to thee”, and - “VIVO” - Nicolette takes refuge in his arms. (M.40 to end). The Three Lovely Birds from Paradise are sky-blue, white as fallen snow and bright red - just like the colors of the Tricolore, the national flag of France - which has been interpreted in many reviews as a sign of an increasingly nationalistic attitude becoming apparent in the war year of 1914. This song mourns the loss of the beloved one who went to war. The Ronde is also made up of three sections. The old women are the first to sing (M.1-28). They warn the young maidens against entering the forest since it is inhabited by all kinds of dangerous (male) beasts. Then (M. 29 – 56) the old men warn the young lads against going into the woods because of the numerous (female) demons living there. The irony of the story is to be found in the final answer of the young people (as of M. 57), who conclude: “We will not go into the woods since the old folks have frightened off all the beasts, anyway.”

One of the best musical moments (and there were many) in the hit movie O Brother Where Art Thou was the mass baptism scene when all the congregants sang “Let's go down to the water to pray...” with thatincredible southern harmony. Pepper Choplin has taken that wonderful spiritual and set it for SATB a cappella voices. A few additional lyrics have been added providing an extra verse but the style and simplicity of the originalhas been maintained. “Down to the Water to Pray” is an excellent choice for services of baptism or general use...inspiring and fun to sing.

Poul Ruders' two Piano pieces Star Prelude And Love Fugue from 1990 expertly arranged for Saxophone Quartet by Jesper Nordin. Programme note Star Prelude and Love Fugue is the fruit of “a wonderful stay in Tokyo in March 1988” (the composer’s words). The two pieces were composed in February 1990 and they are dedicated to Japanese pianist Aki Takahashi who gave the premiere performance at the Lerchenborg Musikdage on 3 August 1990. The prelude is a fantasia on the prelude of Act Two of Poul Ruders’ opera Tycho (1986) about Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (which should explain thetitle). The theme of the  Love Fugueis taken from the opening bars of another earlier Ruders’ work namely the a cappella motet Charitas Nunquam Excidit (which is Latin for “love never ceases”). The following fugue is purged of the genre’s traditional gravitas as is already signalled by the expression mark 'Swinging'.
