From the opening fanfare to the final ensemble gesture, Northwestern Skies is an engaging musical journey with expressive ensemble phrases and challenging section features. The A theme at m. 9, a recurring heroic statement, provides an opportunity to develop solid tone production and intonation in sustained forte passages. The B theme at m. 17, enters quietly and features singing, legato lines and delicate accompaniment. The connected countermelodies in both the A and B sections should be balanced under the main melody. More instrtuments are added to the melody in m. 25, building to the return of the A theme in m. 33.
The lower strings carry the C theme in m. 49, supported by tutti figures in the upper strings. All sections come together in m. 56 to a ritardando into the Maestoso section, setting up a grand ensemble statement in m. 57-58. The moving legatolines at m. 59 and the aggressive figures at m. 61 propel the piece to its final build.
The Coda section at m. 65 begins with a variation of the B melody in the violas and then the violins over a dominant pedal point in the lower strings. Commanding tutti statements of the A theme at m. 69 end the piece with power and excitement.

Fanfare and Celebration was commissioned by the Brass Band of the Western Reserve (Dr Keith M. Wilkinson, director) to celebrate their 15th anniversary. Based in north-west Ohio, the band was formed in 1997 and was competing in the Championship Section of the North American Brass Band Championships in less than three years. The first performance of Fanfare and Celebration took place in Akron, Ohio, on November 10th 2012.The opening Fanfare features the cornet section, in two groups standing either side of the band. A central horn theme brings a change of mood before the cornets take the lead once more. Celebration follows seamlessly and continues the declamatory style until a cantando theme in uneven meter is introduced. A transformed recapitulation ushers in a return of the Fanfare to close the work.

Diptyque is the French word for “diptych,†meaning a hinged two-part image. The first section of this two-part musical painting has an Oriental feel, with characteristic pentatonic melody lines and chords. The second section is a cheerful Saltarello dance that brings out the subtleties of the woodwind section. A juxtaposition of Eastern and Western music, Diptyque reminds listeners of the power of music in transcending all cultural, religious and political boundaries.Diptyque is het Franse woord voor ‘diptychon’, een ander woord voor tweeluik. Het eerste deel van dit muzikale beeld heeft oriëntaalse flair. Karakteristieke pentatonische melodielijnen en akkoorden voeren de boventoon. Hettweede deel vormt qua stijl en karakter een groot contrast, het is een levendige saltarello waarin de kwaliteiten van de houtblazers goed naar voren komen. En de muzikale boodschap? Die Botschaft dieser Nebeneinanderstellung östlicher und westlicher Musik ist, dass die Musik alle kulturellen, religiösen oder politischen Grenzen aufzuheben vermag!Diptyque est un titre parfaitement adapté cette composition en deux parties. Le premier tableau, majestueux, s’inspire d’une ancienne chanson enfantine intitulée Akkatobai, et dont l’origine est rattachée la ville de Nagasaki. Le second tableau offre un joyeux contraste en termes de style et tempo. Gai et lumineux, il reflète l’île méridionale de Kyushu, où se trouve Nagasaki. Une légère et allègre saltarelle met en valeur la virtuosité des bois. La juxtaposition des deux volets de ce diptyque symbolise l’entente.Diptyque è un titolo perfetto per questa composizione in due parti. La prima, dal carattere maestoso, s’ispira ad un’antica canzone per bambini chiamata Akkatobai, originaria della citt giapponese di Nagasaki. Il secondo affresco offre un vivace contrasto in termini di stile e tempi. Gaio e luminoso, esso riflette l’isola di Kyushu nel sud del Giappone. La giustapposizione delle due parti di questo dittico vuole rappresentare l’intesa tra oriente e occidente, evocando al contempo l’universalit della musica.

Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are “concertante†in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.Het tempo van deze mars is statig en de thema’s zijn concertant van karakter: Artemis is dus eerder geschikt als concertmars dan als loopmars. Technisch is dit werk niet erg lastig om spelen, al wordt af en toe wel wat vingervaardigheidvereist. De triomelodie is echter uitgesproken lyrisch en biedt diverse secties binnen het orkest de mogelijkheid om zich melodisch en expressief te etaleren. Een aangenaam klinkende en prima speelbare concertmars!Artemis ist die griechische Göttin der Jagd und der Wälder. Jan Van der Roost ließ sich zum wiederholten Male von der griechischen Mythologie inspirieren und komponierte diesen Marsch mit gemäßigtem Tempo und konzertanten Themen. Obwohl technisch nicht sehr schwer, erfordert er doch stellenweise etwas Fingerfertigkeit. Der Trio-Teil ist jedoch besonders lyrisch und bietet verschiedenen Registern des Blasorchesters die Möglichkeit, sich in Melodie und Ausdruck zu beweisen. Kurz gesagt ist Artemis ein ausgezeichneter und gut spielbarer Konzertmarsch, der viele Blasorchester anspricht.Artémis est la déesse grecque de la nature sauvage et de la chasse. Dans l’art occidental, elle est souvent représentée armée d’un arc et de flèches et entourée de cerfs, de lions et d’ours. Évoluant sur un tempo majestueux et développant des thèmes au caractère concertant, Artemis s’inscrit pleinement dans la lignée des grandes marches de concert. Hormis quelques passages nécessitant une plus grande souplesse des doigts, elle ne contient que peu de difficultés techniques. Artemis est une pièce brillante qui convient au plus grand nombre d’Orchestres d’Harmonie.Artemis è la Dea greca della natura selvatica e della caccia. Nella cultura occidentale, è spesso rappresentata armata di arco e frecce e circondata da cervi, leoni e orsi. Evolvendosi su un tempo maestoso e sviluppando temi centrali dal carattere concertante, Artemis rientra nella linea delle grandi marce da concerto. Ad eccezione di qualche passaggio che necessita una maggiore scioltezza delle dita, il brano contiene solo poche difficolt tecniche. Artemis è un pezzo brillante adatto alla maggior parte delle bande.
