John La Montaine's Conversations was composed so that it might be realized in terms of a variety of instruments with piano. The four movements (Encounter, Dispute, Affections, and Word Games) are based on a twelve-tone row which forms the basis of both the solo and accompaniment parts. Serial technique is carefully and consistently used throughout, though listeners might not even realize it!

I love the winter season, perhaps because I was born in February. My hometown is known for its cold weather in winter. In fact, my first name Yukiko means snow girl. My parents gave me this name because it was snowing on the day I was born. Before I started to write the piece, various images depicting the scenery of a snowy morning developed in my mind. Imagine that there is no wind, no sound, and it is a very clear morning. I heard the sound of an organ playing a traditional chorale somewhere from a distance. This is the scenery of my imagination for this piece. You will find many inner melodies, dialogues and conversations between the instruments throughout the piece. Listen carefully to the other instruments and stay in tune while you play.

The longing opening statements and animated main theme transition into a soloistic, lonesome melodic section that offers a haunting conversation amongst several key instruments. An energetic pursuit and capture of prey is depicted by several percussion instruments, and is followed by a return to the original theme with a powerful finish. Concertino is about relationships and how they change over time. My first goal in writing the piece was to create two distinct characters, in this case the Oboe and English Horn. The Oboe begins with a berceuse-like melody, while the English Horn's entrance is more ambiguous and rhythmically jagged. Over the course of the piece, these two characters interact through a variety of musical settings, their material or personalities continually developing. The strings, more than mere accompaniment, provide commentary on the dramatic action, much like a Greek chorus. They establish each musical scene, interact with the two woodwinds, and further develop the musical material. And while there is a strong concertante element in the piece, it is essentially chamber music. There is a conversational quality, a sense of give-and-take between everyone involved that makes the two woodwinds first among equals as opposed to featured concert soloists. Each of the eight instruments has something unique and important to say.
