By the age of forty, Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg was one of the busiest concert composers in the world. His music avails itself of all manner of modern innovations, but there is a Neo-Classical orientation in his harmonies and formal design that makes his works appealing to a wide audience. The Quintet for Clarinet and Strings was comissioned by Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and first performed in this festival in Finland in 1992. In the composer's own words: 'Despite its rather extended duration (almost 20 minutes) the work is in one continuous movement. Sections are based on either a static material composed of different scales giving the music an 'insect like' appereance, or on directional processes forcing the music to gradually change character or even physically pushing the music to extreme registers or speed.' This edition contains all the Parts.

Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) was a Danish musician, often seen as his country's greatest composer, who now occupies a distinguished platform in the national and cultural heritage of his native land. The Carl Nielsen Edition is an independent project which aims to publish all of his finished works, in the version last approved by the composer. The Quartet for Strings in G minor (Op. 13) is the earliest of Nielsen's four published quartets, having been composed in 1887-1888, but it was not published for over a decade. It comprises four movements: Allegro Energico - Andante Amoroso - Scherzo. Allegro Molto - Finale. Allegro (Inquieto) .

A new edition of one of Berkeley's most frequently performed works, in this the composer's centenary year. This work is a classic in the repertoire of British Music for this medium. The first movement has the sparkling elegance of Mozart whom Berkeley idolised, but also the driving rhythm of a Bach Brandenburg Concerto; the second is a serenade; the third a kind of scherzo; but the final movement seems to reflect the tragic war years with a slow reminiscence of the opening theme at the very end. A critical commentary by Berkeley expert, Peter Dickinson, is provided.

Rarities for strings Jean Sibelius wrote eight works for string orchestra in close to 45 years. Most of these are either arrangements of earlier compositions or were composed in conjunction with a piano version. One exception is the artistic Romanze in C op. 42 of only five minute's duration, which Sibelius composed presumably in 1904 specifically for string orchestra. Breitkopf & Hartel first published the popular and often-played piece for strings in 1909. The present volume III/1 of the complete edition of the Jean Sibelius Works contains all the works by Sibelius for string orchestra, including three first publications.

Chamber music by Jean Sibelius - a welcome addition to the chamber music repertoire for strings with piano.
ISBN 9790004803233. 9 x 12 inches.
This volume presents partly less known, but undoubtedly interesting and highly welcome additions to the chamber music repertoire for violinists and cellists in the reliable Urtext of the Complete Edition. The violin was Sibelius's instrument. He was active as a violinist mainly during his studies at the Helsinki Music Institute from 1885-1889 and for a short time thereafter. The present volume contains Jean Sibelius's opus-numbered works for violin or cello and piano, 36 compositions in total. Most of the works of this volume were created at the beginning of the 20th century and remained unpublished until the early 1920s. Sibelius composed far less music for the cello than for the violin. Malinconia (Op. 20), published in 1911, remained his only opus-numbered work exclusively for cello and piano. This volume also includes Two Pieces (Op. 77) and Four Pieces (Op. 78) as versions for violin with piano and for cello with piano.Chamber music by Jean Sibelius - a welcome addition to the chamber music repertoire for strings with piano.

The works of Viktor Kosenko (1896-1938) - highly regarded in his lifetime as concertmaster, pianist, educator, and composer - became known to the arranger through his Russian-American wife, Alina, a teacher of young violinists and pianists. She owned an old out-of-print anthology of works by both Soviet composers and other world-renowned composers entitled The Young Violinist. Inspired by these lovely melodies, Debbaut compiled and arranged a collection of music exclusively by Soviet composers entitled The Young Soviet Violinist as well as published collections of all four of Kosenko's Four Children's Pieces, arranged for violin and piano, flute and piano, viola and piano, and cello and piano. Four Children's Pieces for piano (1930) were the first works the educational pioneer Kosenko wrote with young pianists in mind based on his own personal deep knowledge of the main objectives of a teacher. Arranged here for string orchestra, this charming suite features four delightful movements: I. Scherzino, II. Melody, III. Olden Dance, and IV. March. Enjott Schneider's composition for cor anglais, bassoon and strings was created in the form of a musical epitaph on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the death of the Bavarian King Ludwig II shrouded in legend. Quotations from works of the King's favourite composer, Richard Wagner, can be heard. At the same time, the picturesque motif of a romantically enigmatic Castle of the Grail, as created by Ludwig II with Neuschwanstein, is reflected in the musical make.In the arrangement for chamber music duo, the work can be performed in concert with cor anglais and piano only. The version for cor anglais, bassoon and strings can be performed with both soloistic string instruments and in groups, for example as part of a school orchestra project.

Though Mendelssohn planned to revise his Italian Symphony, he came to a halt after three quarters of the piece following the successful London world premiere in 1833. The following year, he newly composed only movements 2 to 4, but there was no further performance of the work, let alone a publication. The London version was thus printed posthumously in 1851 and paved the way for the works international breakthrough. It is thus perfectly plausible to continue to consider this early version of 1833 as the valid form of the work, since it alone can claim to have been entirely conceived, conducted and thus introduced to the public by the composer.

This volume contains three reworkings and orchestrations of religious works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy which were originally set for smaller ensembles (solo voices, four-part chorus and organ). They were composed at different times and for different occasions, two of them as commissions. The anthem ,,Why, o Lord, delay forever MWV A 19 was originally the sacred vocal piece MWV B 33, published in England in 1841 with the additional title ,,[…] The Thirteenth Psalm, and in Germany in the same year as ,,Lass, o Herr, mich Hilfe finden with the title ,,Drei geistliche Lieder which was composed at the suggestion of the English literature and music lover Charles B. Broadley who also provided the paraphrase of the psalm text. After Mendelssohn had refused an initial request by Broadley to furnish the anthem post festum with an organ prelude, the composer did not want to turn down a second request to orchestrate the work and he even expanded the existing material with a lengthy closing fugue involving additional trumpets and timpani. The ,,Ave Maria MWV B 19 was written in connection with Mendelssohn's appointment as municipal music director, a position which at the same time included the responsibility for the musical organization of church services. The instrumentation of the work with an accompaniment of two clarinets and two bassoons as well as low strings was due to the fact that the organ in Dusseldorf's principal church St. Lambertus was out of order for an extended period of time, and Mendelssohn considered this solution explicitly only as a surrogate for the organ should there be none. A further psalm paraphrase in English, this time by William Bartholomew, of the hymn ,,Hear my prayer MWV B 49 was set to music in early 1844; the orchestration of the organ part commissioned by the distinguished Dublin musician Joseph Robinson was not completed until 1847 so that the premiere finally only took place after Mendelssohn's death. In the further course of the century ,,Hear my prayer would, particularly in the version with organ accompaniment, come to enjoy great popularity in Great Britain and Ireland.

Among Vivaldi's many flute and recorder concertos, two, both for transverse flute, were known until a few years ago only in incomplete form: RV 431 and 432. Both are written in the comfortable and expressive key of E minor, are transmitted in autograph manuscripts and lack their second movement (RV 432 also lacks its third movement). The seemingly enigmatic instruction Grave sopra il libro replacing the second movement has given rise to the most fanciful hypotheses. The discovery in Edinburgh, in 2010, of a concerto for transverse flute in D minor entitled Il gran Mogol suddenly shed light on the situation: this was an earlier version of RV 431, now complete with its middle movement, a Larghetto that is very possibly identical with the one missing in RV 431. This Gran Mogol, which belonged to Robert Kerr, a Scottish nobleman and amateur flautist, was already known by name to scholars on account of its listing in an eighteenth-century catalogue as part of a set of Vivaldi concertos bearing geographical titles: more recently, there has come to light a letter written by Vivaldi three months before his death in which the composer describes this setin detail. It is very likely that RV 431 and RV 432 belonged to this group of works, the last known collection of its kind in Vivaldis oeuvre. This critical edition places these closely related works side by side for the first time, placing them in their historical context and making them performable through its reconstruction of some lost parts.

One of three works Duddell has written for percussionist Colin Currie, Snowblind highlights the melodic possibilities when writing for percussion. Throughout its three movements, Duddell takes the performers through a modern day Baroque sound-world with both the use of ritornello sections and focussing on unity between the accompaniment and soloist. Snowblind will stretch post Grade-8 students and is ideal for an exam or audition situation.

A mystifying question of versions surrounds the Italian: right after the world premiere in London, Mendelssohn is unsatisfied with his symphony. Since he no longer has the score with him, he writes it down afresh (except for the opening movement), but stops at three quarters of the way. In the meantime, trusted experts weigh in with their views. Fanny Hensel writes to her brother: I dont like the change in the first melody at all; why did you make it? Nevertheless, Felix continues to busy himself with the first movement, but ultimately finds no more time for it and leaves it primarily in the form of the complete early version of 1833, which is published posthumously and remains, to this day, a standard repertoire piece in all concert halls. The revised torso, in turn, was long ignored. It was published in this volume, yet it is clear that the three movements of the incomplete final version of 1834 were from the composers viewpoint not at all ready for publication, seeing that Mendelssohn had never critically reviewed them after having penned them.

Chopin's works for piano and strings were usually made for a specific occasion, and we owe their existence to the repertoire needs of specific individuals. The exception is the Sonata in G minor for cello, the last work by the composer intended for publication, a work reflecting his current style, highly reflective, the result of imagination encroaching into post-romantic areas. Chopin's chamber works belong to the regular concert repertoire. These works were edited by by I. J. Paderewski, L. Bronarski and J. Turczy ski.
