World on a String

Christmas Round The World brings together carols from five countries in settings which explore the vivid national charateristics of each country through the ages.Ideal for both string orchestra and quartet use the arrangements exploit all the techniques and colous of the school or amatuer ensemble. There is plently of melodic interest for the inner parts and cello while jazz latin-american and medieval music provide the inspiration for the up-beat accompaniments. The beginners' line (suitable for Violin Viola and Cello) allows everyone to join in the fun of festive music making at Christmas.

In 1985 an unprecedented collaboration of recording artists created this benefit project for African famine relief. Now 25 years later the recording industry has stepped up again with a remake of this powerful anthem to aid therelief efforts for Haiti. Here is an ideal new version for strings that makes an inspirational program piece for school orchestras.

I Sonetti Lussuriosi is a collection of pieces by world-renowned composer Michael Nyman. This work is a setting of 8 pieces of erotic poetry by Italian poet Pietro Aretino. These are theParts of this work including Violin I Violin II Viola Cello and Piano. I Sonetti Lussuriosi was inspired by Renaissance engravings of couples engagedin sexual intercourse which caused outrage among authorities at the time. At the world premiere of Nyman's work Marie Angel voiced both the male and female characters with the Orchestra di Santa Cecilia conducted byMichael Nyman himself.

John Luther Adams' Everything That Rises for String Quartet. Composers note: I never imagined I would write a string quartet. Then I heard the JACK Quartet and I understood how Imight be able to make the medium my own. The result was The Wind in High Places - a twenty-minute work composed entirely on natural harmonics and open strings. Over the next few years twomore quartets followed. The second quartet  untouched  is a further exploration of the aeolian sound world of the first. Then in Canticles of the Sky the musicians finally touch the fingerboards of theirinstruments. And now comes Everything That Rises. This fourth quartet is more expansive both in time and in space. It grows out of Sila: The Breath of the World - aperformance-length choral/orchestral work composed on a rising series of sixteen harmonic clouds. Everything That Rises traverses this same territory but in a much more melodic way. Each musician isa soloist playing throughout. They surround the audience. Time floats. Over the course of an hour the lines spin out - always rising - in acoustically perfect intervals that grow progressively smaller as they spiralupward... until the music dissolves into the soft noise of the bows sighing.
