Solar Flare, by Tyler Arcari, depicts the huge explosion on the Sun that appears as a sudden bright flash. The piece incorporates a whirlwind of mixed meters to?depict this phenomenon. Arcari showcases his fresh, exciting, and well-scored compositional style in this piece. Solar Flare makes for? an excellent concert opener.A solar flare is a huge explosion on the sun that appears as a sudden increase in brightness or flash. Sometimes these explosions push large amounts of energy and even parts of the sun flying out into space. These events can be so powerful that they cause events on Earth such as auroras, as well as more serious issues like disrupting radio and electronic instruments. To our naked eye, these dangerous explosions are beautiful and quiet. The celestial is a fascinating place, hopefully captured in some small part by this work. About the Work: Solar Flare began as a piece with two goals: to write a space piece in 7/8 and to write a teaching 7/8 space piece. The piece uses a 2-2-3 pattern, so using this in pre-performance warm-ups might be beneficial. The piece is loosely based on a minor second descending to a minor third. This motif is used at the onset of the piece in the mallet percussion and then again in the woodwinds. The melody presents itself at m. 19 in the clarinets. This melodic material is varied and traded throughout the instrument groups until m.67. Measures 6972 should be treated as a transitional fanfare to the new material at m. 73. Measures 99115 to the end of the piece feature a style similar to the beginning that helps to transition to m. 115, which is the climax of the work. An ostinato pattern (2-2-3) is presented with fragments of the melody appearing in the alto voices. This momentum culminates in a large, abrasive area at m. 125 where the suspension-resolution in the brass and horn melodic fragment need to be the focus. This momentum continuously grows until the last note where we resolve finally. Care should be taken that the ^ accent on the final note is one meant to be played heavy, and not short.A solar flare is a huge explosion on the sun that appears as a sudden increase in brightness or flash. I have always been fascinated by the moment between the striking of a match on its box and the slight explosion as it ignites. At that moment the match has technically been lit since it has been struck but the flame still has not appeared. It is a very brief moment of contained but terrific force. In this work I wanted to express this brief period of time during which nothing happens but nevertheless is filled with energy. The imminent explosion awaits the match that has just been lighted.

Tectonic Shift refers to Pangea – the supercontinent that geologists believe shifted over time due to plate tectonics, leaving us with the land masses of today. This spirited work for string orchestra depicts this epic earth-shattering event with a dynamic explosion of sound and rhythm. Set in 7/8 time, the contemporary motif will challenge each section rhythmically and melodically. As suggested by the title, all sections have the opportunity to practice shifting as well. Riffing on the “tonic†of D minor, the bass section is featured with a soli section that drives the momentum of this energizing performance piece. Electrifying!

Magnificat is a tribute to the unaccompanied motets of favourite composers from several eras - in particular those of Dufay, the Eton Choirbook, Robert Carver, Lassus and Bach. The work is therefore full of contrast in texture, harmony, mood and pacing, and exploits the resources of unaccompanied chorus in a manner not only analogous to those already mentioned but also to ensemble or orchestral writing. Naturally - given the sentiments of the text - the mood is predominantly joyful and exuberant; but the darker implications of certain phrases in the text are not ignored. Towards the end there is a big choral explosion on one of the traditional plainsong chants for the Magnificat, before the work subsides into a coda of calm serenity. Magnificat was commissioned by the ORA choir. It is dedicated to the French composer Betsy Jolas, in celebration of her 90th birthday, and in equal celebration of our mutual love of many choral composers mentioned above.

In 1917 two ships collided in the harbor of Halifax, Canada. The resulting explosion devastated most of the city. Echoes of the Silent is a hymn that pays homage to those who perished and to the resilient souls who survived. This music is reverent and reflective, with emotional ebbs and swells and an eventual build to a stirring theme of hope and inner strength. Ideal as a festival or memorial piece, this work is an opportunity for your ensemble to explore softer dynamics, expression and nuance. Dur: 5:05.

The character Matilda, after debuting with humble beginnings in Roald Dahl's 1988 children's novel, has seen an audio adaptation, a feature film, a radio program, a West End/Broadway musical, and finally a film adaptation of the aforementioned musical. The movie dropped on Netflix in 2022 and featured a brand new song from the original composer Tim Minchin. This fantastic new closing song starts small and builds into an enormous and positively extraordinarily cathartic explosion of choral voices!

Garrop’s intense-yet-droll program note refers back to her earlier Tantrum for Alto Saxophone and Piano (2000), noting that WRATH is a new work revisiting Tantrum’s voice while “re-imagining it as a leaner, meaner, ferocious teenager who has moved on from an infant’s temper tantrum into an all-out vengeful fury.†Bearing the movement titles I. Menace, II. Shock, and III. Amok, WRATH is a rare major work in the tenor sax repertoire, with occasional explosions of wailing freedom, generous amounts of altissimo, and long patches of dark, traditional beauty. For advanced players. In 2000, I wrote a feisty piece called Tantrum for alto saxophone and piano. Sixteen years later, Idecided to revisit Tantrum and re-imagine it as a leaner, meaner, ferocious teenager who hasmoved on from an infant’s temper tantrum into an all-out vengeful fury. Wrath shares a fewstructural similarities with Tantrum: both have three movements that follow a fast – slow – superfast pattern; both works also open with a declamatory statement issued by the saxophone; andboth are high in energy and very dramatic. Musically, the works are independent. One of the intriguing features of Wrath was inspired by the manner in which the piece wascommissioned. Saxophonist David Stambler and I built a consortium of fifteen saxophonists whoall took part in commissioning the piece. I wanted each saxophonist to have multipleopportunities to personalize the music by bringing his or her own interpretation to the notes. So Iincorporated several spots in the first movement in which the saxophonists are encouraged toexperiment and tinker with the way they perform the written material (you’ll hear a primeexample of this in the opening material of the first movement). Additionally, near the end of thefirst movement, there is a spot in which the saxophonists are asked to improvise.
