The famous set of dances by Norway's greatest composer were written for piano duet. Grieg later created a piano solo version, but refused to orchestrate the set. After some study of Grieg and his music, Michael Webster has arranged the four dances for Flute, Clarinet, and Piano in a faithful setting, using the piano duet version as a guide. This lively Grieg classic will be a welcome new addition to performance programs. For advanced performers._______________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:Born in 1944, MICHAEL WEBSTER made his New York recital debut at Town Hall in 1968 with his eminent father, Beveridge Webster, as pianist. In the same year, he won the Young Concert Artists International Competition and succeeded his teacher, Stanley Hasty, as Principal Clarinet in the Rochester Philharmonic, a position he held for twenty years. Webster has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the 92nd Street Y, with the Tokyo, Cleveland, Muir, Ying, Enso, and Dover String Quartets, and with the festivals of Marlboro, Santa Fe, Norfolk, Chamber Music Northwest, Angel Fire, Steamboat Springs, Park City, Sitka, Kapalua, Bowdoin, Orcas Island, Skaneateles, La Musica di Asolo, Stratford, Victoria, and Domaine Forget. As soloist he has appeared with many orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra under Aaron Copland and the Boston Pops under John Williams. His travels have taken him as performer and teacher to most of the 50 states, as well as Canada, Mexico,Puerto Rico, Central and South America, Europe, Japan, China, Australia, and New Zealand. Webster was Acting Principal Clarinet of the San Francisco Symphony, and has served on the clarinet and/or conducting faculties of New England Conservatory, Boston University, University of Michigan, and the Eastman School, from which he earned his three degrees. Currently he is Professor of Music at Rice Universityâ??s Shepherd School of Music and Artistic Director of the Houston Youth Symphony, which has won multiple first prizes in national performance competitions. With his wife, flutist Leone Buyse, and pianist Robert Moeling, he plays in the Webster Trio, which has recorded his arrangements on Tour de France and World Wide Webster for Crystal Records. Otherarrangements were recorded for Nami and Camerata Tokyo in Japan with pianist Chizuko Sawa. Webster has also recorded for Albany, Arabesque, Beaumont, Bridge, Centaur, CRI, and New World. He has played at many ClarinetFests for the International Clarinet Association and written a column entitled â??TeachingClarinetâ? in The Clarinet Magazine since 1998. Michael Webster is a Buffet artist-clinician, performing on Buffet clarinets exclusively. NORWEGIAN DANCES (Grieg)Michael Websterâ??s transcriptions for Flute, Clarinet, and Piano have created the core literature for this instrumental genre. Working directly from Griegâ??s original piano four-hands version of the charmingly familiar Norwegian Dances, Webster has given flutists and clarinetists another addition to the ensembleâ??s repertoire.

Five multi-movement trios for piano and two string instruments by Sibelius are known from the years 1883-1888. The large trios, such as the Havtrask and Korpo Trio (JS 207, JS 209), were written for the classical piano trio scoring of violin, violoncello and piano. Apparently, Sibelius kept composing trios to play among his family and friends, having in mind to be one of the musicians himself. Chamber music was an essential part of social life. When listening to Sibelius' trios, one cannot help but notice that the repertoire included many works of Viennese Classicism.Although Sibelius's feelings towards his youthful works were not exactly uncomplicated, Sibelius biographer Otto Andersson later reported that the master, in later years, missed [the Korpo Trio] very much and would have been very pleased to see [it] preserved.First edition of this early work.

ABOUT THE MUSIC Future of Tomorrow (Concert March) was commissioned by the Arts Education Branch, Ministry of Education as the set piece for the Singapore Youth Festival 2016 Arts Presentation for Concert and Brass Bands (Primary Level). This march uses brief excerpts from the well-known Malay folk songs Katak Lompat and Rasa Sayang. Our youths are indeed our future of tomorrow. This joyful-themed march aims to bring out the best in each of your young players. I hope that students, band directors and audiences will enjoy preparing, performing and listening to this work. EDUCATIONAL NOTES Key: Eb Major SECTION BARS EVENT / SCORING / SUGGESTIONS Introduction 1-4 Opens in Eb major with dotted rhythm motif. 1st Strain 5-20 Take note of melodic phrasing above the (light) oom-pah ostinato; melody repeats at m. 13 with the addition of countermelody in the inner lines; although written at mf dynamic, this anew ideaa needs to be heard clearly for contrast with the previous statement. 2nd Strain 21-36 C minor (relative minor); excerpt from Katak Lompat; melody in the lower brass/wind from m. 21 with a contrasting attitude/style from 1st strain; back to a more lyrical treatment from m. 29. Trio 37-56 Stays unmodulated in the same key; opens with a percussion solo feature before the start of the softer Trio theme; keep this section controlled and be sensitive to the balance; the metallic timbre of the muted trumpet/cornet needs to be heard clearly (might suggest to bring the dynamic level up to mf when muted); if cued-notes are played, make sure they are played throughout the melodic phrase as written to avoid awkward leaps. Break Strain 57-62 Excerpt from Rasa Sayang with some play in tonality and instrumental dialogue; quasi grandioso-style before the final strain. Final Strain 63-82 Back to Eb major with the reprise of the Trio theme; festive-like style with fuller orchestration and new countermelodies; dotted rhythm motif from the introduction concludes the march in a codetta-like section from m. 79. NOTE TO THE CONDUCTOR This march has been carefully written with reasonable technicalities and range in mind for younger players. Generally, optional cued notes in parenthesis are given for less experienced players who have yet to develop their range on the instrument. However, they should never be taken as an easy alternative for all players in the section; otherwise, this may result in a less than ideal flow of the musical lines. Marches are good tools to train tempo consistency, articulation and rhythmic precision as well as musical phrasing. I hope that there will be great learning opportunities for your students as they learn this piece. This march is separately orchestrated for both wind and brass bands to maximize the instrumental colors within each ensemble. The parts are therefore not exchangeable between the wind band and brass band sets. I wish you the best in the performance of this work. - Benjamin Yeo.ABOUT THE MUSIC Future of Tomorrow (Concert March) was commissioned by the Arts Education Branch, Ministry of Education as the set piece for the Singapore Youth Festival 2016 Arts Presentation for Concert and Brass Bands (Primary Level). Grand March' was composed in 1995 for the All Shizuoka Youth Band of Japan. The piece opens with a majestic fanfare. A superb-sounding march, with a commanding character, follows. The talent of this Japanese composer reveals itself in the distinctly lyrical character of the trio section, which contrasts wonderfully with the first lyrical themes of the score. “The competition 'Jugen musiziert' 1994 (Youth Making Music) provided the occasion for the composition of the 'Märchengestalten' (Fairytale Figures.) The Youth Music School in Hameln, to which I owe my initial musical training and many formative experiences, asked me if I could contribute a contemporary work for a trio of pupils. Thus this cycle was written, beginning with the fairy and the idea of tracing this word with musical letters. The fairytale-like atmosphere is particularly created by the melody consisting of harmonics on the violoncello. This procedure applies symbolically to the entire cycle: writing a melodic, comprehensible kind of music for young interpreters which nonetheless contain acoustic attractiveness and wit. The plodding gestures of the gnome are part of this, as is a quotation that the witch locates in the world of fairytales. The three movements for the entire trio are complemented by two duets: the prince and the princess. Thus there arises an alteration of instrumental colours that also opens up various possibilities for performances, for each movement can be played on its own as well. When my family opera 'Ronja Räubertochter' was premiered at the Deutschen Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg in February 2015, it was clear how intensively children and youths could react to contemporary sounds. This resulted in my desire to offer them, with the 'Märchengestalten,' a score for them to play themselves.†–Jörn Arnecke All text in German.

Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010, an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold, silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, which has Sanskrit roots meaning ‘Lion City’. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. Roaring fun!

Duo or Trio? This early work by Busoni is a flute duet with an amazingly independent piano accompaniment.

The duo for 2 flutes and piano was written during Ferruccio Busoni's period of compositional instruction with Wilhelm Mayer in Graz, who commented below the music text: The invention is nice, the work superb - thus, praising the contrapuntal skills of the then fourteen-year-old. The carefully written-out flute parts suggest, however, that this piece was not intended as just a practice piece: It was also to be performed. In his youth Ferruccio Busoni was considered especially gifted at the piano. It is probably due to this talent that the piano part often departs from being merely a functional accompaniment, to becoming an equal musical partner with the flute duo.Duo or Trio? This early work by Busoni is a flute duet with an amazingly independent piano accompaniment.
