A performance of the entire work lasts around 4 minutes.A review in the September 2016 issue of Organist's Review called this piece 'approachable and hugely effective. For Soprano Saxophone and Piano accompaniment.'Peter Abelard was a medieval philosopher poet and musician born in France in 1079. He taught at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris lodging with Canon Fulbert whoadmired his work. In time he also became tutor to Fulbert's beautiful seventeen-yearoldniece Helo se.Abelard and Helo se began a passionate love affair (Dance of Peter and Helo se) which resulted in a son Astrolabe.For the sake of Abelard's position they married secretly and Canon Fulbert waspresent at their marriage. But Fulbert later reacted furiously to news that Abelard hadsent Helo se to a convent believing that hehad abandoned her in favour of his owncareer. In revenge he had Abelard castrated (Revenge of Canon Fulbert).After his mutilation Abelard became a monk and he and Helo se remained constantcorrespondents for theremainder of his life. He composed a hymnbook for Helo se who by then was Abbess of the convent of the Paraclete. Among the hymns was avisionary poem of the New Jerusalem set to a beautiful melody in the Dorian mode O QuantaQualia.On his death in 1142 his remains were taken to the Paraclete at Helo se's request andher body was later laid to rest in the same tomb. Finally their remains were taken toParis and in 1817 they were buriedtogether in one sepulchre (In Paradisum).Peter Abelard documented much of his own story in a number of writings includingthe Historia Calamitatum Mearum (The story of mytroubles).'             - James Whitbourn

James Whitbourn's Ada is a work for SATB Choir with Piano Accompaniment commissioned by Lord Lytton to mark the 200th anniversary of Ada Lovelace the mathematician who is widely regarded as the firstcomputer programmer. This is the Vocal Score and the work lasts around 5 minutes.

Composed for the Eucharist of Christmas Night 2004 at the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary Rochester in the year of the 1400th anniversary of the cathedral's foundation.Missa Carolae wascommissioned for Rochester Cathedral and first performed there on 24 December 2004 by the Rochester Cathedral Choirs directed by Roger Sayer.Missa Carolæ was written for the 1400th anniversary of Rochester Cathedral thesecond oldest cathedral in England. Performances there begin with a ceremonial procession that follows the movement of a boy chorister accompanied by pipe and drum from the High Altar to a large crib placed in the Nave gathering the choirs (singing from different parts of the cathedral) and principal clergy in the course of the procession. The work though not literally for dancing is intended to invoke a dance-like spirit which is true to theorigin of the carol as a simple dance form. The choir parts should be very well known so that the singers can sing with the whole of their bodies and not just their voices. It is suitable for liturgical or concert use.
